Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

Looking back on my time at Balfour Beatty, I can confidently say it has been a highly positive and rewarding experience. I have had the privilege of working with some of the best people in the industry, whose support and expertise have contributed significantly to my development.
I have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to engage with different sublots across the project, allowing me to gain a broader understanding of how various teams contribute to project success. In addition, attending company events and networking opportunities has enabled me to connect with colleagues beyond my immediate team and gain a greater appreciation of the wider Balfour Beatty business.
These experiences have helped me grow professionally, expand my network, and develop a stronger understanding of the industry.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

Here's a fresh response focused on the responsibilities and enjoyment of the role, without repeating your previous review:
My role involves supporting the commercial management of the project, working with various teams to ensure processes are completed efficiently and accurately. Day-to-day responsibilities include analysing information, maintaining records, supporting reporting requirements, and contributing to the successful delivery of project objectives.
The aspect I enjoy most is the variety that the role offers. No two days are the same, and I am constantly exposed to new challenges and learning opportunities. I particularly enjoy collaborating with different teams and individuals, as it allows me to gain a wider perspective of the project and understand how different functions contribute to its success.
I also enjoy the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge through practical experience. Being able to take on increasing responsibility, learn from experienced colleagues, and contribute to meaningful work has been particularly rewarding. The collaborative environment and strong team culture make the role both enjoyable and motivating, and I value being part of a team that is committed to achieving shared goals.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
My role gives me good opportunities to contribute to the team through the responsibilities I take on and the support I provide on key project activities. I feel valued because my contributions are recognised, I am trusted with increasing responsibility, and my team is always supportive and willing to help me develop. The collaborative environment makes me feel like an important part of the team and the project's success.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
I believe my compensation package fairly reflects the work I do and the value I contribute. The perks and benefits offered by the company have had a significant positive impact on both my professional and personal life.
In particular, the company car has allowed me to save far more money than I had anticipated, and the two annual pay reviews have helped increase my financial stability and reward my development and contribution to the business
These benefits have enabled me to achieve major personal milestones, including moving out of my parents' home and purchasing my own apartment. Without the opportunities, support, and benefits provided by Balfour Beatty, this would not have been possible. As a result, I feel well rewarded and genuinely appreciate the investment the company makes in its employees.
Additionally, they offered financial support through a third party which also helped me set up for life explaining pension schemes and thinking about the future by opening ISA's.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I feel my role is preparing me very well for my future career. It has given me exposure to a wide range of commercial activities and allowed me to develop both my technical knowledge and professional skills in a practical environment. Through working with different teams and stakeholders, I have gained a broader understanding of the industry and how large-scale projects are delivered.
The support from colleagues and the opportunities to take on new responsibilities have helped build my confidence and encouraged my professional growth. As a result, I feel I am developing the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to progress successfully in my career and take on greater responsibilities in the future.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I would rate the opportunities to develop new and existing skills very highly. Through both formal training and my day-to-day role, I have been able to continuously expand my knowledge and gain practical experience in a variety of areas. The combination of structured learning and hands-on responsibility has allowed me to apply what I have learned in a real project environment, which has been invaluable for my development.
I have also benefited from working alongside experienced colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge and provide guidance. This has helped me build confidence, strengthen my technical and professional skills, and develop a better understanding of the industry. Overall, I feel I have made significant progress since joining and continue to learn and grow in my role.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The support I have received throughout my time here has been excellent. My line manager, in particular, has been incredibly supportive and has played a huge role in my development. He is always approachable, willing to provide guidance, and consistently encourage me to take on new challenges and responsibilities his trust and support have helped me build confidence and grow both professionally and personally.
Beyond my manager, the wider team has been outstanding. Everyone is approachable, knowledgeable, and willing to share their experience, creating a positive and collaborative working environment. I have always felt supported when asking questions or seeking advice, and there is a genuine culture of helping one another succeed.
Overall, I honestly cannot speak highly enough of the people I work with. The support network across the team has been a key factor in making my experience so enjoyable and rewarding, and I have never felt that anything significant was missing from the support available to me.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
Adjusting from full-time education to full-time employment was naturally a significant change, but I feel that Balfour Beatty has supported that transition very well. The flexibility of being able to work from home has been a huge help in maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal commitments.
I have also appreciated that my team took the time to support and develop me rather than throwing me in at the deep end. This allowed me to settle into the role, build confidence, and adapt to a professional working environment at a manageable pace.
While my routine has changed since being a student, I still have a strong work-life balance. My weekends are very much my own, allowing me to pursue hobbies, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy the activities I have always enjoyed. Overall, I feel my role supports both my personal wellbeing and professional development very well.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
The organisational culture has been one of the highlights of my experience. The atmosphere is supportive, friendly, and inclusive. People are approachable and always willing to help, which creates a positive environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and learning from others.
The hybrid working policy is also a great benefit. The flexibility to work from home helps maintain a healthy work-life balance, and I appreciate that the company recognises that employees may sometimes need that flexibility. The team is also very understanding when people are unwell and unable to come into the office. Having that level of support and trust makes a real difference to both wellbeing and job satisfaction.
Overall, the culture is welcoming, supportive, and people-focused, which has made my experience both enjoyable and rewarding.

What stands out most is the inclusive culture that exists across the business. People are welcoming, approachable, and supportive, which creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable being themselves and contributing their ideas. I have also had opportunities to attend a variety of networking events and company initiatives that bring together people from different teams, backgrounds, and experiences, helping to promote a sense of belonging across the organisation.
In addition, the flexibility and understanding shown towards employees demonstrates that the company genuinely values individual circumstances and wellbeing. Overall, I believe Balfour Beatty fosters a positive and inclusive working environment where people are respected, supported, and encouraged to thrive.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
From my very first week, I felt welcomed and included. My team organised a meal outside of work during my first week, which immediately helped me build relationships and feel part of the team. Since then, we have continued to make an effort to socialise outside of work, which has created a strong team culture and made it easy to build positive working relationships.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Absolutely, I would recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend. From my experience, it is a company that genuinely invests in its people, offering excellent opportunities for development, strong support networks, and a positive working environment.
What makes my answer so easy is the people. I have been fortunate to work with an incredible team who have supported me from day one, helped me grow professionally, and made work an enjoyable place to be. The culture is welcoming, inclusive, and collaborative, and there are plenty of opportunities to build relationships both inside and outside of work.
The company also offers great benefits, flexibility, and opportunities for progression. These have had a significant positive impact on my personal and professional life, even helping me achieve major milestones outside of work. Overall, I have had a fantastic experience, so I honestly can't think of a reason why I wouldn't recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
The role matched my expectations very well and, in many ways, exceeded them. The recruitment process gave me a clear understanding of the role, the opportunities available, and the company culture, and my experience since joining has reflected that.
What has stood out most is the level of responsibility, support, and development opportunities I have been given. I expected to learn a lot as a graduate, but I have also been given valuable exposure to different teams, projects, and networking opportunities that have broadened my understanding of the business.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

My biggest piece of advice would be to be yourself and show a genuine willingness to learn. As a graduate or early career professional, nobody expects you to know everything, but demonstrating enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and a desire to develop will go a long way.
During onboarding, I would encourage new starters to make the most of every opportunity available to them. Get involved, ask questions, and take the time to build relationships with people across the business. Some of the most valuable experiences I have had have come from speaking to colleagues from different teams and learning about their roles and experiences.
I would also recommend attending any networking events, training sessions, and social activities that are available. These opportunities help you build your professional network, develop your confidence, and get a better understanding of the wider business.
Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help. Balfour Beatty has a very supportive culture, and in my experience people are always willing to offer guidance and share their knowledge. Making the most of that support will help you get the best possible start to your career.
