Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mott MacDonald?

I joined Mott MacDonald as a Graduate Structural Engineer in 2022 and was promoted to Structural Engineer in 2025. Having no prior industry experience, starting as a graduate was a great opportunity, especially at Mott MacDonald, as the graduate scheme is very well structured and provides an excellent foundation for understanding both the role and the wider industry.
One of the biggest benefits of the scheme is the opportunity to meet and network with fellow graduates from across the UK through various events and activities. These events are well organised and help build strong professional connections.
The best part of the graduate programme is that you learn a great deal, not only from a technical and work perspective, but also in terms of personal development. It helps you build confidence, connect with people from different backgrounds, and become more comfortable socialising and collaborating with others.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As a Structural Engineer, my main responsibilities include designing and analysing structures, producing calculations and technical reports, and in accordance with relevant standards and client requirements. I am also involved in reviewing drawings, attending project meetings, and supporting the delivery of projects from concept through to construction.
The elements of the role that I enjoy most are the variety of projects and the opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges. I find it rewarding to see how design work develops into real-world structures that have a positive impact on communities. I also enjoy collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines, as it allows me to learn from others and develop a broader understanding of the engineering industry.
Another aspect I particularly enjoy is the continuous learning and development opportunities. Since joining Mott MacDonald as a Graduate Structural Engineer in 2022 and progressing to Structural Engineer in 2025, I have gained valuable technical knowledge, improved my problem-solving skills, and built strong professional relationships with colleagues across the business. This combination of technical development, teamwork, and real-world impact is what makes the role so fulfilling for me.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?

Yes

Why?

ne of the key reasons I would recommend Mott MacDonald is the excellent graduate scheme. It is well structured and provides great support for those starting their careers, especially if they have little or no prior industry experience. The scheme offers a strong balance of technical development, mentoring, and professional growth.
I have also valued the opportunity to connect with other graduates and colleagues from across the UK through various networking events and activities. These experiences have helped me build professional relationships, share knowledge, and gain confidence in working with people from different backgrounds.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?

My main advice would be to be yourself and demonstrate a genuine interest in both engineering and Mott MacDonald. During the recruitment process, take the time to learn about the company, its values, and the types of projects it delivers. Be prepared to discuss your experiences, skills, and how you have approached challenges, whether through university, work, or extracurricular activities.
For graduates and early career professionals, it's important not to worry if you do not have extensive industry experience. Mott MacDonald values enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively with others. Showing strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset can be just as important as technical knowledge.
Once you join, I would recommend making the most of the onboarding and graduate development opportunities available. Attend networking events, connect with colleagues and fellow graduates, and don't be afraid to ask questions. There is a lot of support available, and building relationships early on can help you learn faster and settle into the company more comfortably.
Overall, my biggest piece of advice is to stay curious, be proactive, and take advantage of every opportunity to learn and develop. The more you engage with the people, training, and experiences available, the more rewarding your experience at Mott MacDonald will be.
