Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an A&PS Intern, my role involves supporting sales and pre-sales activities across the business while developing a broader understanding of HPE's operations. On a day-to-day basis, I work on Excel automation and data analysis tasks to improve reporting efficiency and provide business insights. I also spend time shadowing sellers and pre-sales specialists to gain exposure to customer engagement, solution positioning, and the sales process. Additionally, I work with colleagues across different business units to understand how various teams collaborate to deliver solutions and drive business outcomes. This has given me valuable insight into both the commercial and technical aspects of the organisation.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant amount of responsibility throughout my internship. From an early stage, I was trusted to work independently on Excel automation and data analysis tasks that supported reporting and operational processes. I regularly worked with business data, identified opportunities to improve efficiency, and delivered solutions that added value to the team.
In addition to my own projects, I had the opportunity to shadow sellers and pre-sales specialists, gaining exposure to customer engagements, sales strategy, and solution development. I also collaborated with colleagues across different business units, which helped me understand how teams work together to achieve business objectives. This combination of independent work and cross-functional exposure allowed me to make meaningful contributions while developing both my technical and commercial skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I have developed a range of both technical and professional skills throughout my internship. Technically, I have significantly improved my Excel skills, particularly in data analysis, reporting, and automation, where I have created solutions to streamline processes and improve efficiency. I have also strengthened my problem-solving abilities by working with business data and identifying ways to optimise existing workflows.
From a professional perspective, I have developed my communication and stakeholder management skills through collaborating with colleagues across different business units and interacting with sales and pre-sales teams. Shadowing sellers and pre-sales specialists has also enhanced my understanding of the sales cycle, customer engagement, and how technical solutions are positioned to meet business needs. Overall, the internship has helped me build a stronger combination of technical, commercial, and interpersonal skills.

I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my internship. During my first month, I completed a structured handover and onboarding process with the previous intern, which helped me understand the role, key responsibilities, and ongoing projects. This gave me a solid foundation and allowed me to become productive quickly.
Beyond the initial onboarding period, I was able to seek support from colleagues and managers whenever needed. I also benefited from shadowing sellers and pre-sales specialists, which provided valuable guidance and insight into different areas of the business. The combination of structured onboarding and ongoing support enabled me to develop confidence in my role while gradually taking on greater responsibility and working more independently.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Hewlett Packard Enterprise to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Hewlett Packard Enterprise

My advice to anyone applying to Hewlett Packard Enterprise would be to be proactive, curious, and willing to step outside your comfort zone. HPE offers exposure to a wide range of business areas, so taking the initiative to connect with people across different teams and learn about different functions can significantly enhance your experience.
When applying, focus on demonstrating not only your technical skills and academic achievements but also your communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. During the internship, I found that those who actively sought out opportunities, asked questions, and built relationships gained the most from the experience.
I would also recommend making the most of networking opportunities, shadowing sessions, and any projects outside your immediate responsibilities. HPE has a collaborative and supportive culture, and there are many opportunities to learn from experienced professionals. Being enthusiastic, open to learning, and willing to take ownership of tasks will help you get the most out of the internship and stand out as a candidate.
