Placement Quantity Surveyor Review

In my role as a quantity surveyor on a full‑year placement with JN Bentley I am supporting the commercial management of a £60 million sewage and wastewater treatment facility. My day to day responsibility involves tracking and managing project costs, monitoring subcontractor accounts and assisting with procurement activities. I regularly work with engineers, site managers, and the wider commercial team to ensure that financial information is accurate and aligned with project progress.

I’ve been given a high level of responsibility throughout my placement, and the team has trusted me to take ownership of meaningful commercial tasks. I even manage my own work packages. JN Bentley has looked after me extremely well, providing guidance when needed but also giving me the autonomy to develop confidence and competence in my role. The responsibility I’ve been given has helped me grow both technically and professionally, and I feel like a valued part of the commercial team.

I’ve learnt a lot of new skills during my placement especially around cost management and working with subcontractors. I’ve also developed my confidence on site by improving my communication with the wider team and strengthened my ability to manage my own workload.

Its still ongoing but i have received a lot of support and guidance up till this point.

The company culture at JN Bentley has been really positive. The team is supportive and always willing to help. I’ve felt looked after throughout my placement, and the general atmosphere on site and in the office has been professional and focused on delivering quality work while also being friendly.

I enjoyed the placement overall. The work kept me busy, the team was sound, and I felt comfortable settling into the role. Being involved in a big project made it a good experience for me. But again its still ongoing
