UK Market Demand Planner Undergraduate Review

In my role as an Undergraduate UK Market Demand Planner, I am responsible for optimising demand forecasts and ensuring a consistent supply of pharmaceutical products to meet UK market needs. I manage portfolios of medicines and medical devices, balancing demand, inventory and supply risks to ensure continuity of supply for patients. This includes developing and maintaining accurate forecasts using historical data, market insight and planning tools, and working cross functionally to align inventory with demand while minimising excess stock and write off risk. I partner closely with supply, finance and commercial teams to resolve supply issues and support timely deliveries.

Yes. I had my own portfolio of medicines and medical devices. I also sought out additional responsibility. I really felt like a trusted member of the teams I worked within and was given work accordingly.

Yes. During my placement I have significantly developed my analytical, stakeholder management and communication skills through independently managing product portfolios and collaborating with cross-functional teams across Pfizer. I also gained new skills in demand forecasting, inventory optimisation, risk management, Lean Six Sigma, AI applications and marketing through a cross-functional growth assignment. Additionally, networking, recruitment and mentoring responsibilities have strengthened my leadership, influencing and relationship-building abilities.

I received a high level of support throughout my placement. My manager and wider team were incredibly supportive, creating an environment where I felt trusted, encouraged and challenged to grow. They invested significant time in my development, providing regular guidance whilst also giving me the autonomy to take ownership of my work. They were particularly supportive of me pursuing opportunities beyond my core role, helping me gain broad exposure across Pfizer and develop both professionally and personally.

Pfizer's culture was a standout aspect of my placement. Colleagues were welcoming, supportive and always willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I particularly valued the openness of the organisation, which made it easy to connect with people across different functions and sites, build meaningful relationships and learn from a wide range of perspectives.

Overall, my placement year exceeded my expectations. I gained a huge amount of professional and personal development, developed valuable technical and transferable skills, and built strong relationships with colleagues across the business. The experience reinforced my desire to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly because of the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives. It has been an incredibly rewarding year that has given me greater confidence, broader business understanding and a clear direction for my future career.
