Summer Placement Student - Mechanical Engineering Review

On a day-to-day basis, I contributed to a range of tasks including attending team meetings, completing work on a large scale project, and collaborating with engineers to discuss my work. I work closely with my manager and team members to complete assigned tasks, track progress, and ensure deadlines are met. Furthermore, I contacted suppliers and employees from other areas of WSP for help and guidance.
The role involved learning new processes, software, and ways of working, which has helped me build my confidence and broaden my understanding of the organisation.

Initially I was guided through the different calculations, software, and interfaces that my team used. After they were confident I understood this I was given a lot of responsibility to carry out work. In engineering every piece of work is checked by another engineer to confirm it is correct and this way I could be given work to complete by colleagues who could then check and approve if afterwards or vice versa.

Everybody was so supportive and always willing to help me.

The company has an excellent culture and there are so many opportunities to try new things outside of work. There are a variety of sports on offer. I played football and tennis which were sports I played before joining WSP. However, I also played softball which was completely new and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Outside of sports there are so many socials on offer from wine tasting to yoga.
