Summer Placement Student Review

I support the delivery of bridge engineering projects while developing practical experience in structural assessment and design. My role involves assisting engineers with technical tasks such as reviewing bridge inspection reports, undertaking engineering calculations, supporting finite element modelling and analysis, interpreting technical data, and preparing reports and other project documentation. I work closely with experienced engineers and project managers, gaining exposure to industry standards, engineering judgement, and project delivery processes. The placement provides valuable insight into the assessment, maintenance, and design of bridge structures while developing technical, analytical, and professional skills required for a career in civil and structural engineering.

Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement. While working under the supervision of experienced bridge engineers, I was entrusted with tasks that contributed directly to live projects. These included reviewing bridge inspection records, undertaking engineering calculations, developing and troubleshooting finite element models, interpreting analysis results, and preparing technical notes and reports. I was also responsible for investigating technical issues, reviewing relevant standards and guidance documents, and presenting my findings to colleagues. This level of responsibility allowed me to develop both my technical competence and professional confidence, while gaining an understanding of how engineering judgement is applied in real project environments.

Yes, I learnt a wide range of new technical and professional skills during my placement while also developing existing skills gained through my university studies. One of the most significant areas of development was my understanding of bridge assessment and structural analysis. I gained hands-on experience using LUSAS finite element software to develop, review, and troubleshoot bridge models, which improved my ability to interpret analysis outputs and understand structural behaviour. I also developed my knowledge of industry standards and assessment methodologies by reviewing technical guidance, bridge inspection information, and engineering calculations.

I received excellent support throughout my placement. My manager and colleagues were approachable and willing to provide guidance whenever required, while also encouraging me to take ownership of my work. Regular feedback and mentoring helped me develop my technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and confidence as an engineer.

The company culture was very welcoming, supportive, and collaborative. From the beginning of my placement, I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance from colleagues, who were always willing to share their knowledge and experience. Despite being a placement student, I was treated as a valued member of the team and was encouraged to contribute to discussions and project work. This created a positive learning environment where I felt supported in developing both my technical and professional skills.

I really enjoyed my placement and found it both challenging and rewarding. It allowed me to develop my technical skills, gain experience on real engineering projects, and work alongside experienced professionals in a supportive environment. The experience increased my confidence as an engineer and reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in bridge engineering.
