Infrastructure surveyor/asset manager intern Review

I shadowed multiple teams throughout my internship including the asset management team, admin team, project management, agricultural, land assembly and CPO, compensation and building surveying team.
This covered a range of tasks. In asset management, I attended site inspections, dealt with customer queries, scheduled repair and redecoration works, interpreted damp, asbestos and security surveys and identifying defects on site. I also helped to draft important documentation like lease documents, k sheets and validate invoices and quotations.
On the land assembly and compensation side, I helped to produce valuations reports and conduct due diligence, assist in crop compensation claims, assist in a compensation claim involving the disturbance of a house from local development works and I gave my thoughts and ideas on a live project in selattyn involving the replacement of a water mains under common land.
I also helped to do administration tasks such as updating databases, identifying inconsistencies and communicating with contractors. I also shadowed a building surveyor and supported them with the analysis of a dilapidation claim, conducted due diligence and helped them to analyse the lease for relevant clauses. I also assisted by suggesting remediation for defects I had identified.

I was given a lot of responsibility because I was able to submit work sheets, conduct site inspections, validate colleagues work and assist with the administration of the live databases.

Yes, i have learnt many skills. Some of these include using the various software systems such as dwellant, rightmove+ and excel. I also learnt how to differentiate between improvements that are worth the cost vs improvements that are not financially viable. I learnt how to deal with different clients and interact based on the situation. Communication was one of the main skills I was able to develop by witnessing interactions in the office and during meetings. I was also exposed to some niche sectors that many construction professionals might not come in contact with such as the statutory powers Severn Trent have over pieces of land with regard to mains water works.

I received constant support and guidance throughout my experience at Carter Jonas. My line manager always checked up on me and made sure I had a staff member with me at all times to help me. The culture is very open and many of the employees are happy to answer any questions. The wider company also hosted daily presentations giving me a broader perspective and access to experts in terms of asking questions.

It was a very calm atmosphere. The culture is very welcoming and feels more like a team, even with colleagues that are not apart of your actual team. Many of the employees have great passion for there work and are always open to teaching and learning opportunities.

This internship was an extremely positive experience that I would recommend to any young professional. It gives you a broad perspective on the industry and helps to develop your social skills significantly. I really enjoyed this time and wish it could have lasted longer.
