Planning and Development Intern Review

During my internship with Carter Jonas’ Planning & Development team, I supported planners across a variety of planning and development projects. My work included analysing consultation responses, researching planning matters, attending planning committee meetings, producing Excel-based data summaries and visualisations, and assisting with project work. I also had some exposure to the urban design & master planning division within the P&D department. The placement gave me a practical insight into the planning system and the day-to-day work of a planning consultancy.

Yes. I was trusted to manage tasks independently and deliver work that was used by the wider team. I was encouraged to take ownership of my work, ask questions, and present my findings clearly, while receiving support and feedback where appropriate. This helped me develop confidence and gain experience in a professional working environment.

I strengthened my analytical, research and communication skills by working on live planning projects and presenting information in a clear and structured way. I also improved my Excel skills through analysing consultation responses and creating data visualisations. Attending planning committee meetings gave me a better understanding of how planning decisions are made in practice, while working alongside experienced planners increased my confidence in a professional consultancy environment.

I received a high level of support throughout the placement. Everyone in the team was approachable and willing to answer questions, explain processes and provide constructive feedback. I was given the guidance I needed while still being trusted to work independently, which created a supportive learning environment and helped me build confidence.

The company culture was welcoming, supportive and professional. Everyone I worked with was approachable and happy to answer questions, which made it a great environment to learn in. As a new intern, it sometimes felt like I needed to take the initiative to build relationships outside of my immediate team, which could be a little daunting at first. However, once those conversations were started, people were friendly and willing to engage.

I really enjoyed my placement. It was a valuable learning experience, and I appreciated the opportunity to work on a variety of projects while gaining insight into the planning profession. The social elements also helped massively with overcoming my lowkey fear of networking!
