Vacation Scheme Student Review

Day to day, my role involved completing work set by my supervisor, which gave me a clearer sense of the kind of tasks trainees are trusted with and how they contribute to live matters.
Alongside this, the vacation scheme students took part in presentations, workshops and networking sessions, which helped us learn more about the firm’s different practice areas. The scheme also included activities with the wider vacation scheme cohort, including social and team-based events. I found these especially helpful in getting to know the other participants and trainees in a more relaxed setting, and they gave me a better feel for the people and culture of the firm.

Yes, I felt I was given a good level of responsibility during the vacation scheme. I had the opportunity to work on live matters, which made the experience feel meaningful and gave me a real insight into how work progresses in practice. I appreciated being trusted with tasks that contributed to ongoing work, while still having the support and guidance of my supervisor.

Yes, I developed both new and existing skills during the vacation scheme. One of the main areas was time management. Because I was given work alongside scheduled presentations, workshops and cohort activities, I had to think carefully about how to manage my time and stay organised throughout the day.
I also gained a better understanding of what it feels like to prioritise tasks when there are several things happening at once. Working on live matters helped me appreciate the importance of being responsive and reliable, while also taking the time to produce careful and considered work.

I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout the vacation scheme. The graduate recruitment team were very approachable and made sure we understood the structure of the scheme, what was expected of us and who we could speak to if we had any questions.
I also received substantial support from my supervisor, who took the time to explain tasks clearly and provide context for the work I was doing. I felt comfortable asking questions whenever I was unsure, which meant I was able to learn a lot from the experience.
