Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Live client work: I sat in Corporate, where I was given genuine responsibility across both pro bono and chargeable matters. Rather than being handed rigid tasks, my supervisor let me develop my own working style and problem-solve independently, which I really valued.
Learning by osmosis: Sharing an office with my supervisor meant I could sit in on their calls, which gave me real insight into things I wouldn't necessarily get from a formal task. For example, seeing firsthand how London coordinates local counsel on cross-border deals.
Conversations across the firm: I proactively met people across different departments to build a broader picture of the firm's culture and practice areas. These conversations covered everything from AI's likely impact on legal practice, to secondment experiences, to what makes someone thrive at the firm.
How would you rate the structure of the insight
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
The structured talks gave me a broad overview of all the main practice areas at the firm. Through interactions with my supervisor and other associates in the department I sat in, I was able to delve further and learn about the practice area in more depth. The structured introductions to different practice areas allowed me to gain a good overview to be able to have meaningful conversations with many different individuals across the firm.
I was also better able to understand the Training Contract structure. Multiple people I spoke with reinforced the idea that the firm's Training Contract is designed to produce well-rounded lawyers, and several trainees shared how they'd approached choosing their own seats, which gave me a practical framework for thinking about my own seat selection.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Beyond the technical side, I gained a lot from shadowing more senior colleagues and sitting in on client calls, which helped me pick up on things like problem-solving under pressure and how to communicate with confidence in a professional setting. Having conversations with people across different teams also helped me develop a better sense of how to network and build rapport quickly, which isn't something you can really learn from a textbook.
Overall, it was as much about developing soft skills as it was about the technical legal skills, and I feel like I've come away stronger in both areas.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I was also struck by how diverse and multicultural the environment felt, with people from a real mix of backgrounds and career paths, including several who'd switched into law from other professions. That diversity came with a strong sense of respect and it felt like there was genuine space for different personality types and working styles to thrive.
There's also a clearly entrepreneurial spirit running through the firm. People are encouraged to take initiative and seek out work across different teams, and that kind of proactivity is visibly valued and rewarded. Altogether, it gave me a strong sense of a culture that's collaborative and inclusive.

Recommendations and Advice
Would you recommend Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP to a friend?
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
Be proactive about meeting people. Don't wait for conversations to be arranged for you. Reach out to people across different practice areas, even ones you don't think you're interested in and go into these conversations with an open mind.
Take the responsibility you're given seriously. Where I was trusted with real client work, I tried to bring my own thinking and problem-solving and initiative to it rather than just waiting for instructions.
Be genuinely curious about the culture, not just the work. Asking people about their own journeys, including career changers, helped me get a real sense of whether the firm's values and atmosphere were the right fit for me, not just whether the work itself was interesting.
Bring your own background into the conversation. Don't be afraid to draw connections between your previous experience and the work you're seeing, it can make your interest feel more authentic and help you stand out.
