Vacation Scheme Student Review

The vacation scheme was a well-structured mix of departmental work, practice group sessions, assessed exercises, group presentation preparation and social events. Day-to-day, I attended sessions with different teams, completed research and written work in restructuring, and had the chance to speak with trainees, associates and partners. It gave me a realistic insight into the quality of work and supportive culture at Gibson Dunn.

It was very helpful in showing how Gibson Dunn’s London office combines high-end disputes, finance, restructuring, corporate and regulatory work. The practice group sessions explained the firm’s breadth, while conversations with trainees showed what the role involves in practice. I came away with a much clearer sense of where trainees fit into the work and why the firm appeals to me.

I developed my ability to approach unfamiliar technical work, identify the key commercial points, and turn research into clear written analysis. I also improved my attention to detail and learned to ask targeted questions when a task was new. The group presentation also helped develop my teamwork and concise communication under time pressure.

The culture felt ambitious but also very approachable. People clearly cared about doing excellent work, but the atmosphere was not intimidating. Partners, associates and trainees were generous with their time, encouraged questions, and made a real effort to involve vacation scheme students. It felt like a high-performing firm where people are also personable and down to earth.
