Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

The scheme consisted of several components. Firstly, I attended workshops introducing each of the firm's practice areas. Secondly, I completed work for my supervisor and other lawyers. This included answering questions about a contract; referencing cited sources; reviewing numerical datasets; writing part of a newsletter and writing a research memo. Finally, the scheme included two assessed tasks (a written exercise and a presentation).

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?

The scheme helped me to understand the structure of the firm (through workshops) and the breadth of work done by lawyers (by shadowing and completing work for my supervisor).

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Before shadowing my supervisor, I had never seen lawyers develop strategies to use during litigation. Learning more about this was one of the highlights of my scheme. I similarly had not seen how lawyers reference documents within skeleton arguments and other court submissions.
I additionally learned more about practice areas I had not explored much previously, such as tax and restructuring. I am now interested in learning much more about these areas of law.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

All members of the firm (both lawyers and other staff members) were very friendly and approachable. This allowed me to ask questions about their work and time at the firm.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

I thoroughly enjoyed the Vacation Scheme and would recommend it to anyone interested in working as a commercial solicitor.

I would advise others to think about why they are interested in the work the firm does in London. For example, the firm focuses mainly on servicing clients in Aerospace & Defence, Energy and Technology in London. Other offices may service clients in other or additional sectors, such as Life Science in the US.
