Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Non-typical software placement. Working with Research and development of a new software product with different departments.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was leading my own direction in the research and development of the software product. However, while I was independently responsible for the development of the project, I didn't bear responsibility for project failures though this never came to pass.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I've developed skills in many fields, both in software using specific applications, message sets, methodologies, C++, Python and Java. I have also developed soft skills in working and presenting for other departments, and gained work experience and skills in various pieces of hardware.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I had a great time with my team, my manager was always incredibly approachable. There are many schemes and groups that help with support, but the team was always excellent. They were easy to talk to, gave huge amounts of information when I needed it and were always great to bounce ideas off of. They were also lovely outside of work when I met them outside. In general I had a great experience with people.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

In my experience I've found it to be inclusive, while I have heard of a few incidents I know the people involved have been able to implement appropriate measures and feel more safe quickly. I always found the atmosphere to be comfortable, but each person holds themself to a high standard in my experience. There are good chances to socialise inside work, but socialising outside of work needs a decent amount of independent investment. Diversity and economic initiatives are good, I was surprised that there are groups for each and that they have things so well thought through but it was nice to know that they are thinking about it and to such detail.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement. I had a great chance to experience many things, the people were great and I believe I have come out of it feeling much more confident in my abilities and knowledge. The placement wasn't much like I'd expected, but ultimately I think it worked out for the better because of the range of experiences I was able to have and the people I was able to interact with.
