Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Involved in the design of propulsion systems used in our company's products. My day to day work changed throughout the year but can involve using our in-house tools in MATLAB and Python to evaluate propulsion performance. Can also involve propellant research, working with rocket motor suppliers, and working with other departments on multi-disciplinary projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, learnt new skills in MATLAB. Learnt and applied the theory and fundamentals of propulsion. Developed communication and organisational skills. Improved presentation skills as well. Took part in many training courses across different areas of the company.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lot. Had regular meeting with my Technical Co-ordinator to track my progress, review my placement objectives, and how I am getting on generally. Had a buddy prior to starting that I could email with any questions about the job/ office. Had probation reviews as well to get feedback on how I am doing, and discuss further personal development opportunities.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Everyone in my office was very welcoming and kind. Lots of societies you can join to meet people outside your team. Lots of Early Career events organised as well to meet others in the same position as you. Great culture and lively atmosphere, lots of people from my department tend to come into the office every day so there is always lots of people around.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

The variety of work I got to be involved in. Every project or study was different and focused on different aspects and applications of propulsion. Kept it interesting as I kept learning new things.

What advice would you give to others applying to MBDA

Get involved as much as possible. The company has so much to offer and when you are a new starter you should take advantage of this. You get out as much as you put in, so to make it a valuable experience it is important to volunteer for things and be keen to learn.
