Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role was a software engineer intern and that involved writing code that formed part of the product tracked with jira tickets, test management for the team, primary maintenance of an in house testing suite and additionally, ad hoc intern activities such as event planning, hosting, etc.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given adequate responsibilities within my team and on site. On the team I primarily supported the maintenance and growth of our in house testing suite by adding features, fixing bugs and other general CICD. On site I was involved with the site council and other RG's, I co-ran the craft club with a fellow intern and was involved in the planning and hosting of various charity/fundraising events.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes I primarily developed my coding skills. Key areas include: Typescript, python, C++, Linux, Bash, Git, etc
I've also gained much skill with working in a team and working with other people on a project, balancing my time between priorities, and being a team player

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Lots of support and guidance. I was assigned a mentor at the start of the placement who I meet with weekly to discuss my progress and anything I might need help with. I've found also most of the team to be quite helpful in answering questions I have.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture is very welcoming. The site is very charity driven and intern are in charge of running a lot of events so I had lots of fun planning events and seeing people in the wider site participating.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

For the most part I generally enjoyed my placement. As a first experience in full-time working and as an Engineer I found it insightful and I've learnt so much more about technology and career paths in the industry than what I was taught in university.
