Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Surface engineer, main role was creating the A-Class surfaces for the interior of the vehicle, meaning every visible or touchable surface had to be A-Class surfaced. Given CAD training on the software IceM Surf which we then used to work on live projects taking it through multiple gateways and making considerable development on the new vehicle

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a lot of responsibility, working under a mentor on an area of the interior of the car, I was given independence and trust to work on many parts by myself, meaning the surfaces I created will end up on the final vehicle, this is great responsibility to be given in my first year. I was also given many opportunities to take more responsibility and have a more meaningful impact on the team and wider vehicle programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I learnt how to use multiple new CAD software's, a skill I can take forward to sue in m final year of university and in my future career. I built on a lot of soft skills throughout the year as well, including communication, learning how to overcome the fear of communicating with new people. I also built on my presentation skills as I was given many opportunities to present my work throughout the year

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I was given a mentor to have throughout the year who was there for me to help with any CAD issues or problems I needed solving. Everyone in the team was very helpful and supportive, being there for me if I had any issues. As well as this I signed up to get a buddy, this was someone entirely random from a different team who was there to guide me in other aspects of being in my first job.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

My team did a lot of work throughout the year to build on team culture, making many changes if necessary to ensure everyone felt heard and seen. As well as this the company provided an early careers team who planned socials and get-togethers, to allow everyone who was new to the job field to get together and grow together.
