Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?

Overall, I’d describe my experience at BAE Systems as really positive. One of the best parts has been how much responsibility you’re given early on - you’re not just observing, you’re actually contributing to real projects and seeing the impact of your work, which makes it feel really meaningful.
I’ve also really appreciated the focus on professional development. There are lots of opportunities to learn new skills and get involved in training, which has helped me build confidence and develop quite quickly.
On top of that, people are generally really supportive and happy to help, which makes a big difference as a graduate. Overall, it’s been a really valuable and enjoyable experience so far.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

My main responsibilities involve supporting projects through data analysis, building tools, and helping turn data into something useful for decision-making. I’ve spent a lot of time using tools like Alteryx and Tableau, and more recently getting hands-on with ArcGIS and Python.
The part I enjoy most is definitely the mix of problem-solving and learning new tools — especially using ArcGIS and Python, which I’ve found really interesting to get stuck into. I also really value the people I work with. My team are incredibly knowledgeable but also genuinely approachable and happy to share what they know, which makes a huge difference as a graduate. It’s just a really supportive and enjoyable working environment where you feel like you’re constantly learning and contributing at the same time.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
To a great extent. From day one, you’re given the opportunity to get involved in real projects that have genuine impact, which makes you feel like a valued member of the team straight away. The work is definitely challenging, but in a good way - there’s always support around you, whether that’s guidance, feedback, or just someone to bounce ideas off when you’re unsure.
A good example of this was on one of my projects where, by day three, I was already presenting to a customer and received really positive feedback. Experiences like that really reinforce that your contributions are meaningful and recognised.
Overall, I’ve felt trusted and supported at the same time, which has made it easy to build confidence and feel valued within the team.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

4/5
Overall, I feel the compensation package is fair for a graduate role, and the benefits offered are solid. While there isn’t one standout perk that immediately comes to mind, the overall package feels competitive and aligned with the level of responsibility and experience you gain.
For me, a big part of the value comes from the opportunities to work on meaningful projects, develop skills quickly, and gain exposure early on in my career. Combined with the supportive environment and focus on development, it feels like a good overall deal.
So while the benefits themselves are good, it’s really the combination of learning, responsibility, and experience that makes the role feel worthwhile.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I feel like the role is preparing me really well for my future career. There’s a big emphasis on continuous development, which makes a huge difference - for example, we’re given 20% of our time each week to focus on training, which is really supportive and encourages you to keep building new skills alongside your day-to-day work.
There’s also a lot of flexibility in what you can learn, and the company is generally very supportive in funding training as long as it contributes to your professional development. That’s allowed me to explore areas I’m genuinely interested in and develop skills that feel relevant to my future.
On top of that, there’s a strong push towards professional accreditation, with dedicated support for becoming chartered. It’s clear that the company is invested in helping graduates build long-term careers, not just do well in their current role.
Overall, it feels like a really solid foundation for developing both technically and professionally.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
Very highly. I’ve picked up a huge number of new skills since starting, both through day-to-day work and formal training. There’s a really strong culture of learning, and it’s encouraged from the start.
One of the best things is the massive catalogue of pre-approved training courses, where funding is already in place - it makes it really easy to just get stuck into learning something new without lots of extra admin. Alongside that, the work itself constantly pushes you to develop and apply new skills in a practical way. I definitely feel like I’ve developed a lot in a relatively short space of time, which has been really rewarding.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The level of support is really strong, with lots of different options available - including the early careers team, line managers, mentors, and coaches. There are also structured personal development courses that you are auto enrolled in so you’re well supported from all angles.
The buddy system is another great part of it - you’re paired with a grad from the year above or two, which makes it much easier to ask questions you might otherwise feel a bit silly asking.
It’s not just in place on paper either - I’ve seen it work really well in practice, like when someone I know was supported in moving teams and is now having a much better experience. Overall, it makes a big difference in helping you settle in and grow.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
I’d say my work-life balance is really good. There’s a clear emphasis on not burning out, with the understanding that it’s not sustainable or productive long-term. There are also regular check-ins around wellbeing, which helps reinforce that.
In terms of hours, it’s generally very manageable - I’ve only stayed late once to meet a deadline, and that was my own choice rather than expectation. Overtime is pretty rare, and when it does happen, you can take the time back, which is great. For example, if you spend extra time travelling for a meeting, you can finish early another day.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
The overall culture is very positive, inclusive, and welcoming. There are employee resource groups (ERGs) for a wide range of communities - such as LGBTQ+, women, and different cultural backgrounds - which help people feel connected and supported.
The general atmosphere is friendly and approachable, even though people can be quite busy. It’s easy to reach out and book time with others to learn more about what they do, which makes the organisation feel open and collaborative.

How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
I would rate BAE Systems highly in this area. There’s a clear effort to promote equality, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across the organisation. The employee resource groups (ERGs) are a great example of this - they cover a wide range of communities and help people feel connected, supported, and represented.
More broadly, the culture feels genuinely inclusive and welcoming, rather than it just being a tick-box exercise. People are respectful, open, and supportive, which makes it easy to feel comfortable being yourself at work.
Overall, it feels like an environment where inclusion is taken seriously and actively encouraged.

How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

4/5
I would rate BAE Systems highly in terms of CSR. There are good opportunities to get involved in volunteering and community initiatives, including two dedicated volunteer days each year, which makes it easier to actively give back.
There’s also a clear wider focus on ethical practices and environmental responsibility, even if it’s not always front and centre in day-to-day work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I’d recommend BAE Systems to a friend because it’s a really supportive place to start your career and you’re given meaningful responsibility from the beginning. You’re not just observing - you’re contributing to real projects and seeing the impact of your work early on, which makes it feel worthwhile.
There’s also a huge focus on development, with lots of training opportunities, time set aside to learn, and support towards things like chartership. It feels like the company genuinely invests in your long-term growth.
On top of that, the people and overall environment make a big difference - everyone is friendly, approachable, and happy to help, which creates a really positive experience day to day.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

2/5
The role didn’t fully match my expectations based on the recruitment process, as the process itself was quite disjointed and I originally applied for a different role. There was also a delay before starting, which added to that uncertainty.
However, once I joined, the actual experience has been much more positive than the process suggested. The work I’ve been involved in has been engaging, and I’ve been given meaningful responsibility and opportunities to develop.
So while the recruitment process didn’t set the clearest expectations, the role itself has turned out to be a really valuable and enjoyable experience.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?

My main advice would be to do your research and talk about things you’re genuinely interested in. It really comes across when someone is passionate about what they’ve worked on or learned, and that’s something people definitely value here.
Everyone is quite curious and technically minded, so it’s much more engaging when you can show real enthusiasm for your skills and experiences, rather than just giving rehearsed answers.
