Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
One factor that really enhanced my experience was having completed an industrial placement at BAE prior to joining the scheme. This meant I already had an established network and understanding of the company, which made the transition into the graduate role much smoother.
The graduate training programme itself is useful, particularly for those who are new to a corporate environment. However, for those with prior industry experience, some of the content can feel a bit basic or less targeted.
A major strength of the scheme is the breadth of opportunities available. I’ve had the chance to visit multiple BAE sites and network with a wide range of colleagues, including senior leaders and business directors. These experiences have been invaluable for both personal and professional development.
Overall, I would recommend the scheme, particularly for its strong project involvement and networking opportunities, although the training could be better tailored to accommodate different levels of prior experience.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The aspects I have enjoyed the most are those closely aligned with core chemical engineering principles. Being heavily involved in equipment testing and pilot-scale work was particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to see how processes perform in practice and gain hands-on experience. More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to take on greater responsibility by leading the process design work within a feasibility study for a chemical process, which has been both challenging and highly engaging.
Overall, I’ve most enjoyed the technical and practical elements of the role, especially where I can directly contribute to process development and design decisions.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
I feel that my opinions and input are genuinely valued, and there is a collaborative environment where ideas are listened to and considered. Since joining, my role has grown in responsibility, which I see as a reflection of my performance and track record of delivering quality work.
Overall, I feel well-integrated into the team and confident that I am making a meaningful impact, both through my technical contributions and my involvement in project decision-making.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
However, as my role has evolved and I have taken on significantly greater responsibility - particularly leading elements of process design on a strategically important project - I feel that my current compensation does not fully reflect the standard, quality, and impact of the work I am now delivering.
Overall, while the package is competitive for an entry-level graduate, there is room for improvement in recognising and rewarding individuals as their responsibilities and contributions grow over time.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
As my responsibilities have grown, I’ve also had the opportunity to take on more ownership, including leading process design work within a feasibility study. This has helped me develop not only my technical capabilities but also important skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and communicating with a range of stakeholders.
In addition, the wider opportunities available through the graduate scheme, such as networking with colleagues across different sites and engaging with senior leaders, have contributed to my broader professional development.
Overall, I feel well-prepared for the next stages of my career, although there may be some scope to further tailor development opportunities to align with individual experience levels and career goals.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
In contrast, the majority of my development has come from the practical experience gained within my role. Working on real projects, taking on increasing responsibility, and being involved in activities such as process design and pilot-scale work have been key to building both my technical and professional skillset.
Overall, while the formal training plays a supportive role, it is the hands-on experience and exposure within the role that has contributed most to my development.
Experience & Company Culture
How is the support you receive?
There is a positive and open environment where feedback and discussions are encouraged, which has helped me develop both technically and professionally. Having access to multiple points of support has also been valuable, as it allows me to gain different perspectives when needed.
While support is readily available, I would say that, like much of the scheme, it relies on being proactive in seeking it out. More structured or regular check-ins across all support channels could further enhance the experience, particularly for those who may be less confident in initiating conversations.
Overall, I feel well-supported and able to access the guidance I need to perform effectively in my role.
How is your work-life balance?
I currently work a four-day week, which means my working days are longer, but having a long weekend provides a significant benefit. This allows me to properly switch off from work and spend more time on activities outside of work, which supports both my mental wellbeing and personal life.
While the longer days can be demanding at times, the flexibility and compressed working pattern help to balance this out. Overall, I feel that my working pattern enables a healthy balance between work and personal time.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
The company offers a degree of flexibility in terms of hybrid working, with typically around one day per week working from home. This provides a good balance between in-person collaboration and the flexibility of remote work.
In terms of values and inclusivity, the culture feels respectful and professional, with an emphasis on teamwork and open communication. While experiences may vary across teams, my overall impression has been that the atmosphere is supportive and encourages individuals to contribute and develop.
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
From my experience, the workplace feels welcoming and individuals are treated fairly, with a strong focus on collaboration and mutual respect. There are visible efforts to support diversity and inclusion through internal networks and company initiatives, which helps to raise awareness and encourage engagement across the business.
That said, while the framework and intent are clearly in place, the impact can vary depending on the team or area of the business. Overall, I feel the company is moving in the right direction and is committed to continuously improving in this space.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
From my experience, there are opportunities to get involved in volunteering and community-focused activities, and the company encourages employees to contribute where possible. There is also a visible emphasis on environmental responsibility and operating in a sustainable and ethical manner, which aligns with broader industry expectations.
While these initiatives are well-established at a company level, day-to-day involvement can depend on the individual role, team, and how proactive you are in engaging with them. Increasing visibility and accessibility of opportunities at a local level could further enhance participation.
Overall, I feel that BAE Systems takes CSR seriously and is making positive contributions, with scope to further embed these initiatives into everyday employee experience.
Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Why?
There is a positive and supportive working environment, with good flexibility and opportunities for development. While there are areas that could be improved - such as tailoring training and recognising increased responsibility - the overall experience has been very beneficial.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
Because of this prior experience, the role largely matched my expectations. I was able to transition smoothly into the graduate scheme and continue working in a similar technical area, with increased responsibility over time.
Overall, the role aligned well with what I anticipated, although the level of responsibility and opportunities to contribute meaningfully have exceeded my initial expectations in a positive way.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
For the application process itself, it’s important to demonstrate both your technical knowledge and your ability to work within a team, as collaboration is a big part of the role. Preparing examples that show problem-solving, initiative, and real-world application of your skills can be particularly useful during interviews.
In terms of onboarding, being proactive is key. Taking the initiative to reach out to colleagues, ask questions, and get involved early on will help you settle in more quickly and make the most of the opportunities available.
Overall, showing enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and an ability to contribute practically will put you in a strong position.
