Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
This role primarily involves analysing the revenue performance of film and TV content across digital transactional platforms, including sales and rentals, and translating this data into meaningful commercial insights. On a day-to-day basis, it combines the delivery of recurring reports with deeper analytical work, where performance trends are identified, investigated, and clearly communicated to stakeholders. A significant portion of the role focuses on maintaining and managing datasets to ensure accuracy and consistency, while also responding to both internal and external data requests from teams such as sales, marketing, and finance. Alongside technical skill development in tools like Excel, databases, and coding languages, the role also builds strong commercial acumen by encouraging an understanding of how factors such as release windows, pricing, and market dynamics influence performance. In parallel, there is a strong emphasis on learning the end-to-end film lifecycle, from theatrical release through to home entertainment, which provides important context for interpreting data and supporting business decision-making.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement. While as interns we were often involved in more manual processes, such as Excel-based data cleaning, managing datasets, and uploading data to support reporting processes, these tasks were essential to the accuracy and reliability of the team’s outputs. At the same time, we were regularly trusted with handling data pull requests from other teams, where we provided topline insights to support both internal decision-making and external client-facing pitches. Beyond this, interns were given opportunities to present findings, contribute to wider team initiatives, and take ownership of individual projects, while also getting involved in collaborative work across the team and broader business. This allowed me to develop both technical and communication skills, and to actively contribute to the team’s overall objectives.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my placement. From the outset, there was a structured training period during the first few weeks, which helped build a solid foundation before taking on more responsibility. I also had regular weekly one-to-one check-ins with my manager, which provided a dedicated space for feedback, guidance, and discussing development opportunities. Beyond this, the wider team was consistently approachable and supportive, always willing to answer questions and explain concepts, particularly around technical areas such as coding and database management. There was a clear culture of patience and learning, which made it easy to ask for help and continuously improve. In addition, the company actively encouraged networking, supporting interns in connecting with different teams and functions aligned with their interests, and fostering a very open, positive culture where coffee chats and informal conversations were readily welcomed. I also had shadowing opportunities with different teams within the company and within the wider business, including with a sister company.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture and overall atmosphere were very positive, collaborative, and people-focused. There was a strong emphasis on teamwork and open communication, with colleagues at all levels being approachable and willing to support one another. The environment encouraged learning and development, where asking questions was welcomed and employees were given the space to grow their skills, particularly in technical areas. More broadly, the organisation promotes a “people first” culture, aiming to create a supportive and inclusive workplace where employees feel valued and motivated. There was also a clear focus on collaboration and transparency across teams, which made it easy to engage with different parts of the business and contribute beyond your immediate role. Overall, the atmosphere was both professional and friendly, with a strong culture of networking and mentorship, where initiatives like coffee chats and informal meetings were actively encouraged to help build relationships and explore career interests. A key part of the culture was the strong encouragement of networking and relationship-building. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) played an active role in this, organising regular events and providing opportunities to get involved beyond day-to-day work. Interns were given the same access as full-time employees, including the chance to join executive committees within these groups and contribute to wider initiatives such as charity programmes. This, alongside the open culture of coffee chats and mentorship, created a very welcoming and engaging environment where it was easy to build connections and explore different career paths within the company.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement overall and found it to be a very valuable experience. While some of the work, particularly around manual data cleaning and repetitive reporting tasks, could be routine at times, I was able to take initiative and seek out additional opportunities to keep myself engaged and continue developing. I particularly enjoyed the analytical side of the role, where I could work with large datasets, identify trends, and translate findings into insights that were useful for stakeholders.
Beyond the technical aspects, one of the most rewarding parts of the placement was the exposure to the wider business and the opportunity to build relationships across different teams. Through networking, collaboration, and experiences such as organising a shadowing day, I gained a much broader understanding of how different functions contribute to overall business performance. The supportive environment and encouragement to take ownership of tasks and projects also made the experience more meaningful, as I felt I was able to contribute positively while continuing to grow both technically and professionally.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NBCUniversal to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to NBCUniversal
My main advice would be to focus on both your technical preparation and your personality, as team fit is a key part of the hiring process at NBCUniversal. While having a strong foundation in Excel and data skills is important, especially given the analytical and reporting nature of the role, it’s equally important to demonstrate curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work well in a collaborative environment. I would recommend carefully reading the job description to understand what the role involves and preparing relevant examples that show your analytical thinking and attention to detail. At the same time, be yourself during the application process, as the company places strong emphasis on culture and how well you engage with the team, which is just as important as your technical ability in both the hiring process and day-to-day work.
