Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
In my role as an apprentice building surveyor, I support a range of professional tasks including preparing Reinstatement Cost Assessments (RCAs), assisting with contract administration, and carrying out CAD work. I contribute to the production of clear, accurate reports that assess building condition and recommend remedial actions in line with Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors standards. Alongside this, I assist with contract administration duties such as preparing tender documents, tracking project progress, and liaising with contractors to help ensure works are delivered on time and within budget. I also use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce and amend technical drawings, helping to communicate design details effectively and support project planning.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I enjoy the programme a lot as I am always learning and exposed to new subjects. The people i work with aid the process as well.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
Yes, I have developed my existing technical skills, particularly in CAD, where I have gained confidence in altering and updating plans to reflect design changes and site conditions. This has included revising layouts, adjusting dimensions, and ensuring drawings are accurate and compliant with project requirements. Through this, I’ve improved my attention to detail and my ability to interpret technical information, as well as becoming more efficient in using CAD software to support project delivery.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme is well organised and clearly structured, providing a good balance between practical experience and academic learning. Tasks and responsibilities are set out in a logical way, allowing me to progressively build my knowledge and confidence over time. I’ve found that there is clear guidance and support in place, which helps me stay on track with both work-based activities and coursework. Overall, the structure of the programme has made it easier to manage my workload effectively while continuing to develop key skills in a consistent and meaningful way.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
I receive a strong level of support from my employer throughout the programme. There is clear guidance provided on tasks and expectations, and I’m given regular opportunities to ask questions and learn from more experienced colleagues. I’m supported both on-site and in the office, with constructive feedback that helps me improve and build confidence in my work. Overall, the support I receive has been consistent and encouraging, making it easier to develop my skills and progress in my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. The course is well structured, with clear guidance on assignments, deadlines, and expectations. Tutors are approachable and responsive, providing helpful feedback that supports my progress and understanding. There are also regular check-ins and resources available, which help me stay on track and manage my workload effectively. Overall, the support from my training provider has been consistent and beneficial in helping me work towards achieving my qualification.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification through my training provider has been very effective in helping me perform better in my role. The knowledge I gain from my studies directly supports the tasks I carry out day-to-day, such as understanding construction methods, interpreting drawings, and applying relevant regulations. It helps me make better-informed decisions and approach work with greater confidence. The combination of academic learning and practical experience allows me to apply what I’ve learnt in real situations, which has significantly improved both my competence and overall performance.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work, including social and team-based events such as rugby and organised camping trips. These activities provide a great opportunity to build relationships with colleagues outside of the workplace and strengthen team cohesion. They also contribute positively to work-life balance, allowing for a more enjoyable and well-rounded experience while supporting both personal and professional development.

I would recommend Carter Jonas as it provides a strong and well-rounded experience within the property and surveying industry. As a well-established UK property consultancy with a wide range of services—including building surveying, planning, development, and project management—it offers exposure to diverse projects and sectors, which is valuable for developing knowledge and skills.
The structured support provided to apprentices, alongside opportunities to gain hands-on experience in both office and site-based work, helps build confidence and competence over time. The company’s multidisciplinary approach also means you can work alongside experienced professionals across different areas, which supports learning and career progression.
In addition, the firm has a strong reputation and positive client feedback, with high levels of customer satisfaction and recommendations, which reflects the quality of service and professionalism within the business.
Overall, it is a supportive and professional environment that allows you to develop both technically and personally, making it a good place to start and build a career in building surveying.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Carter Jonas?

If you’re applying to Carter Jonas, I’d suggest focusing on both your technical interest and your attitude to learning.
Make sure you show a genuine interest in the property and construction industry, particularly building surveying if that’s the role you’re going for. It helps to have a basic understanding of what surveyors do day-to-day and to be aware of current topics in the built environment.
It’s also important to highlight your willingness to learn and develop. As an apprentice or entry-level candidate, they’re not expecting you to know everything, but they will value enthusiasm, reliability, and a proactive mindset. Giving examples of times you’ve taken initiative or developed a skill (like CAD or teamwork) will strengthen your application.
When preparing for interviews, try to demonstrate good communication skills and professionalism, as you’ll be working with clients and colleagues regularly. Showing that you can work well in a team and are open to feedback is key.
Finally, be yourself and show that you’re motivated to build a long-term career in the industry. Carter Jonas is a professional and supportive environment, so they’re looking for people who are keen to grow and make the most of the opportunities available.
