Assistant Design Coordinator Review

Coordinating multidisciplinary engineering design teams of over 30 people
Project and design management.
Producing PowerPoints and reports to cover the scope of the design elements being assured.
Risk and assumption reviews and checking several CDM hazards
Leading coordination calls and keeping track of project tasks
Ensuring designs are safe and compliant with relevant technical standards
Liaising with clients, contractors, and project management teams
Managing design documents and drawing packages
Supporting BIM coordination and federated model reviews
Facilitating design review meetings and coordination calls

I was given a suitable level of responsibility during my placement. I was trusted to take ownership of specific tasks and contribute to the development of 8 HS2 assets. This included coordinating with different disciplines, managing and reviewing design information and supporting design reviews with the contractor and client. I was encouraged to work independently whilst sill receiving support and guidance.

My technical understanding of engineering drawings, technical standards and commercial liabilities has improved significantly. I also gained a better understanding of how engineering designs are developed and coordinated across several disciplines. Additionally, I improved my soft skills such as communication, time management and teamwork through communicating with engineers, project managers and contractors.

I had regular feedback from my line manager as he was my manager is working with me on the same project. My manager was always willing to provide advice, answer questions and asked me whether I was happy during the placement. A monthly review was taken to review goals and I had a project buddy who provided guidance and support whilst making me feel welcomed.

The company culture was positive and one of the biggest things I liked about working at Mott MacDonald was how friendly the people were. There were many social and networking events which was a great benefit as it allowed me to meet new people and build my connections.

I enjoyed my placement and it was a rewarding experience that allowed me to gain knowledge into engineering projects while developing my communication skills. The project team made me feel very welcomed. However, there are certain tasks that can be repetitive.
