Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Software Tester Apprentice at IBM, my role involves supporting the quality assurance process across various applications and systems. On a day-to-day basis, I design and execute test cases, identify and report bugs, and work closely with developers to ensure issues are resolved efficiently. I also gain exposure to different testing methodologies, including manual and automated testing, while learning tools such as test management systems and scripting frameworks. The role combines technical problem-solving with collaboration, and no two days are exactly the same, which keeps the work engaging. At times, balancing learning with delivery expectations can be challenging, but it provides valuable real-world experience.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have generally enjoyed the apprenticeship programme as it offers a strong mix of hands-on experience and structured learning. The opportunity to work within a global company like IBM has allowed me to develop both technical and professional skills in a supportive environment. The mentorship and team collaboration have been particularly valuable, helping me build confidence and industry knowledge. While some aspects of the programme can feel fast-paced or demanding, overall it has been a rewarding experience that has helped me grow and better understand the software development lifecycle

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have developed a range of both new and existing skills throughout the apprenticeship. I have significantly improved my understanding of software testing principles, particularly through studying for and applying knowledge from the ISTQB certification. This has helped me build a solid foundation in areas such as test design techniques, defect management, and the overall software development lifecycle.
In addition, I have gained hands-on experience with both manual and automated testing, including writing and executing test cases, identifying bugs, and working with testing tools. My analytical and problem-solving skills have improved as I’ve learned how to investigate issues and think critically about edge cases.
I have also developed my communication and teamwork skills by collaborating closely with developers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure quality outcomes. Overall, the apprenticeship has helped me grow both technically and professionally, giving me more confidence in my abilities as a software tester.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is generally well organised, with a clear structure that combines on-the-job learning with formal training. There are defined goals and checkpoints which help track progress, and the inclusion of certifications like ISTQB gives a clear direction in terms of skill development. At times, the structure can feel slightly flexible depending on project demands, which can make it challenging to balance work and study, but overall it provides a solid and supportive framework for learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer. My team is approachable and willing to help when needed, and I’ve had opportunities to learn directly from experienced colleagues. There is encouragement to ask questions and develop new skills, which has helped build my confidence. Occasionally, workloads can be busy which may limit availability, but overall the support has been consistent and valuable throughout the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider offers helpful support, particularly when working towards qualifications like ISTQB. The learning materials are clear, and there is guidance available when preparing for exams or completing coursework. Regular check-ins help keep progress on track. At times, more frequent interaction or faster feedback would be beneficial, but overall the support has been effective in helping me achieve my learning goals.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification has been helpful in improving my performance in my role, particularly through the knowledge gained from studying ISTQB. It has strengthened my understanding of key testing principles, test design techniques, and the software development lifecycle, which I can directly apply in my day-to-day work. This has made me more confident when creating test cases, identifying defects, and contributing to discussions with my team. While some aspects are more theoretical, overall it provides a strong foundation that supports my practical experience.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are a variety of extra-curricular activities available which help create a good work-life balance. These include things like five-a-side football, which is a great way to stay active and socialise with colleagues, as well as apprentice meetups where we can connect, share experiences, and support each other. There are also occasional networking and social events, which help build relationships across the company. Overall, these activities add to the overall experience and make the workplace more enjoyable.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend IBM because it offers a great environment for learning and development, especially as an apprentice. You gain hands-on experience working on real projects while also having access to structured training and qualifications like ISTQB. The company provides good support, opportunities to develop both technical and professional skills, and the chance to work alongside experienced professionals. Overall, it’s a strong place to start a career in tech.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
I would advise applicants to show a genuine interest in technology and a willingness to learn, as these are key qualities IBM looks for. It’s important to be prepared to talk about problem-solving and teamwork, as these are a big part of the role. I’d also recommend having a basic understanding of software testing concepts if applying for a testing role, as this can really help during the application process. Finally, be confident, ask questions, and make the most of the opportunity to demonstrate your enthusiasm and potential.
