Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role predominantly involves helping my team create machine learning models to improve business process. Roughly half my time involves coding, bug-fixing and reviewing the code of my colleagues. Some of my time is spent engaging with my direct stakeholders to test new infrastructure capabilities and also identify their requirements with Data Science projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The program has been the best professional experience I have had so far. I have the opportunity to develop myself not only professionally but also to explore different avenues at the BBC. For example,, even though I work in a very technical field, I've had the chance to work in a podcast at the company that gets shared to everyone.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have greatly improved my overall coding ability and I have also learnt how to get a model into production. This has made me more confident in creating Machine Learning models that can actually be of use to the wider organisation. I have also greatly improved my collaboration and problem solving skills by working with a large range of individuals and on a plethora of tasks.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I believe that my course is well structured. The modules slowly build up an understanding of Data Science that can be directly applied to the workplace. The tutors are attentive and they are more than happy to support my learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The BBC has been greatly supportive throughout my apprenticeship. They help tailor my learning needs by finding opportunities to use work experiences to help support university tasks. They are also understanding of me needing more time during stressful university deadlines.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
There are regular checks up from my business coach, who is an employee of the business provider and who's main role is to support me throughout the apprenticeship. They help provide direction on how I am progressing throughout the role. There are also wellbeing and support lines that can be reached. My main issue is with the admin team of the provider. They are very slow to respond to issues and their solution takes time to complete. For example, I have applied for an extension and have been told it takes 2 days to process, it has been two weeks. I've chased this with the provider but there has been no progress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Though generally the training provider helps my general understanding of Data Science, I feel the work done in my role has been far my complex than the learning from my training provider. This might be due to it only being the first year and will most likely improve over time. The training provider has also taught me about different machine learning models that has improved my general understanding in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a great deal of opportunities in the workplace available to apprentices. As apprentices it seems there's more chances to get involved with extra-curricular opportunities than full time employees. Personally, I have joined the apprentice podcast which is a podcast run by apprentices at the BBC and shared across the corporation. Additionally, there are a large amount of social events happening throughout the organisation.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The BBC is a wonderful organisation to work for. There are so many different opportunities to get involved with and the work role has been the most fulfilling job I've had. If you want to feel like you're helping the general public or a part of something better than the BBC is perfect.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Explore the roles available and find something you are genuinely passionate about. Find some ways to demonstrate your interest in the role through research into the field or courses/videos you've used to develop your knowledge. Everyone at the BBC understands that apprentices don't have all the knowledge but they are looking for passionate individuals.
