Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Whilst at Mott MacDonald, I carried out work on a variety of different projects, these ranged from modifying existing structures, new builds and research on carbon. Depending on the type and stage of the project I was given different tasks. These were checking or carrying out my own calculations, generating reports, participating in meetings internally, meeting with clients and other engineers and architects, and finally carrying out research based tasks, using excel or other programmes.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

The level of responsibility given was very dependent on the type and stage of the project, but where appropriate I felt responsible and trusted to carry out meaningful work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Developed my use of Excel, and use of Tekla Structural Designer. I also used a variety of other tools such a Cell Beam, Revit and AutoCad.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I was assigned a buddy on the first day, and got on very well with them meaning I felt supported throughout my placement. The office staff were very helpful and welcoming, and finally my team were very easy to work with, and offered excellent guidance.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Very friendly, sociable and there were many opportunities to get involved with the company outside of the every day work, including sporting activities, meals, walks to the Cambridge botanics etc. I also felt that there was a push within Motts for sustainability, and clearly a strong ethos for diversity and inclusion.
