Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Involved in the design, modifications and upgrades of water treatment works & sewage treatment works. This includes carrying out research, feasibility studies, optioneering, outline design and detailed design. Day to day I'm involved in the production of technical drawings, reports, equipment schedules and calculations.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I had individual responsibility for the production of multiple deliverables and was responsible for keeping the team up to date on the status of these. I could always get support from the wider team to complete these though. All my deliverables would go through check and approval from more senior members of the team before they could be sent off.
I was also responsible for keeping my line manager informed of my individual resourcing.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Became more conversant with MS Office applications, increased technical knowledge of water treatment systems and equipment, learned how to complete a variety of calculations and assessments, learned how to engage with suppliers and within my own team effectively.

Plenty of support and guidance was given. If I ever had any queries they were always resolved quickly and suitably.

Having good technical knowledge is very important and a necessity but having great soft skills and the ability to communicate confidently is very highly sought after in my experience.
