Industrial Placement - Heavy Civil Infrastructure Review

I am studying Civil Engineering at university, and in my job, I am part of the Foundations and Geotechnics team. It involves a variety of different roles, on different jobs, for example desk studies, load calculations, pile calculations etc.

Yes, I have been given a good level of responsibility. Not so much running areas of a project, which I wouldnt expect anyway, but being given a role and fulfilling it myself, not having to work for someone else doing it.

The main skills I’ve developed are the technical skills linked to my role and the day‑to‑day work I’ve been involved in, which has helped me better understand how things work in a real working environment. Alongside this, my communication skills have improved a lot, mainly through working closely with a team, getting involved in discussions, and helping to organise social activities.
I’ve also become better at managing my time and staying organised, as I’ve had to balance different tasks and stick to deadlines. Being in a professional environment has made me more confident in myself and more comfortable taking responsibility for my work. Overall, the placement has helped me settle into the routine of working life and given me skills and experience that I can take forward into future roles.

I have received a high level of support throughout my placement. My manager, buddy, and the rest of the team are always more than willing to help if I have any questions or need any further clarification. I am always given clear guidance as to what I am needed to do, and if im not fully sure, there is always someone to assist.

The company culture is very relaxed and welcoming, whilst keeping its professionalism. Everyone here is friendly and approachable, which made settling into the team very simple.
Further more, outside of work, a lot of socials are organised, to enhance the teams relationship, and get to know one another more.

I still have 3 months of it left, but I am loving it. I am enjoying the chance to work in and be part of a team, whilst learning on the job at the same time. I also love the fact that there is a lot of social organisation, so you can shut off work at the end of the day and still enjoy some time with the team.
