Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
The job role involves engineering support for broadcast systems. Working to support and upgrade throughout the whole process from the cameras and microphones in the studio, to the servers and transmission systems which get the programmes to the viewer.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is split into 3 months at university and 3 months full time working at your placement. This si often a good split, however is a very intense way of working towards a degree and career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt a lot of the practical and theoretical engineering skills required to work on the specialised equipment used. Additionally, I have been able to significantly develop my interpersonal and problem solving skills throughout the apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The organisational structure of this programme is well implemented. It is block learning between 3 months at university and 3 months working at your placement. This works well as it allows for in person teaching for the degree aspect with Birmingham City University. There has been some reorganisation in the people in charge of this programme in both the business and university but as this settles down, the level of support seems to be improving.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The employer is excellent at providing support throughout the apprenticeship for whatever you require.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The training provider is improving in their level of support for the apprentices, however initially it did feel like apprentices were an after thought. However now that they have reorganised and created a dedicated team, the level of support is improving from the training providers perspective.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The vast majority of what is taught can be practiced and implemented through the placement blocks. The employer also allows for movement between different departments and teams which allows you to implement a wide range of the theory taught by the university.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There is a large apprentice network which organises socials for all apprentices. Additionally there are opportunities to attend events through work to meet and network with both other apprentices and colleagues from the BBC and other organisations.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The BBC is a large supportive business with a huge number of opportunities to learn and grow, as well as experiences different areas and job roles. It is in the unique position as a public broadcaster where the primary objective is to provide good, impartial programming, converse to many other media companies. It is an enjoyable place to work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
When hiring apprentices, the BBC is most often looking for new and unique perspectives. Be honest and authentic in who you are and really enforce your willingness and excitement to learn. Hundreds if not thousands of people apply the their apprenticeship programmes every year and they are looking for those who stand out.
