Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I work in Product Analytics as a data analyst, using data to understand user behaviour and support evidence based decisions with stakeholders. My work includes conducting proactive analysis, developing and maintaining dashboards, and evaluating experiments.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

3/5
The degree and formal education side is poor. Studying with the Open University limits how you learn as it is completely virtual. The degree which I carry out as a data analyst completely misses the mark and focuses on primarily old school computing concepts. The upside however is that the BBC is a great place to work, amazing people and great place to develop skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
As this was my first job, I have learnt a lot about the workplace environment and ways of working. I have developed technical skills such as learning how to use Tableau and have had practice in communicating with stakeholders. On the formal degree side, the knowledge learnt is limited as many modules include writing up essays on ways of working, communication, time management etc and for the more technical concepts, they are not relevant to my day-to-day eg types of networks, types of cables etc..

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
It is structured quite unusually with times in which you could only be working on one module and then times when you are doing 3 modules plus exams. There is some structure in that there is one dedicated study day per week.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
The best thing about doing the apprenticeship with BBC is that all my colleagues are super supportive. They are super understanding of our situation and are genuinely curious and want to help in whichever way possible. I have been very lucky and had great line managers and task managers and also informal mentors at work to help in all aspects of my development.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

1/5
The Open University when faced with feedback seem to go in circles. Quite hard to get through to and get a desirable outcome. I would go as far to say all of my support as a young professional and even student has come externally or from the BBC.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

2/5
It is a complete disconnect. To date, I have not been able to apply or take a concept back to my team or ways of working.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

2/5
There is an apprentice network that arranges socials, usually quarterly. There isn't much more outside of day to day work that I am aware of.
