Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, I support the commercial delivery of the project by assisting with valuations, procurement, and the management of subcontractor packages. I liaise with subcontractors, issue and track site instructions, and provide day‑to‑day commercial support to the site team to help maintain cost control and smooth project delivery.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I genuinely enjoy the programme, as it’s helped me grow both professionally and personally. Being able to apply what I learn on the job while gaining real site experience makes the work engaging and rewarding, and it’s confirmed that quantity surveying is the right career path for me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt new skills and continued to develop existing ones throughout the programme. I have improved my commercial awareness through working on valuations, procurement, and managing subcontractor packages, as well as strengthening my communication skills by dealing regularly with subcontractors and the site team. I’ve also developed better organisation, confidence, and problem‑solving skills by handling site instructions and supporting day‑to‑day project delivery.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well organised and structured, with a clear balance between on‑the‑job learning and academic study. The expectations are set out clearly, and the combination of site experience, regular tasks, and university support helps me stay focused and progress steadily. Overall, it allows me to develop in a logical and manageable way while building real industry experience.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer throughout the programme. I have access to guidance from my line manager and the wider commercial and site teams, who are always willing to answer questions and provide mentoring. This support has helped me build confidence, develop my skills, and progress effectively in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I do receive support from my training provider, particularly with reviews, assignments, and meeting the programme requirements. However, there could be more consistent and proactive support, especially with clearer guidance on coursework expectations and more regular touchpoints. Additional academic guidance and faster feedback would help make the learning process smoother while balancing work and study.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel the qualification helps me in my role, as it gives me a solid understanding of the theory behind what I’m doing on site. It’s helped things like valuations, procurement, and contract processes make more sense, rather than just completing tasks without understanding the bigger picture. That said, some areas feel quite theory‑heavy, so making stronger links to real site situations would make it even more useful day to day.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are a number of social activities we go to, both internally and with sub contractors as well as opportunites for networking which i have frequently attended. A sports team would be a good experience however my current site doesnt have any currently.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace Construct to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend Mace Construct to a friend. It’s a good environment to learn in, with strong exposure to live projects and experienced teams who are willing to support and share their knowledge. The level of responsibility given helps you develop quickly, and it’s a great place to gain real, hands‑on experience early in your career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace Construct?
I would say to do a lot of research into the company before applying. Mace Construct values people who are proactive, professional, and not afraid to ask questions, so showing enthusiasm and a strong work ethic goes a long way. It also helps to have a basic understanding of what the role involves and to be open to both site work and office‑based tasks, as you gain the most from the experience by getting involved as much as possible.
