Management Trainee Review

My experience at Mace Construct has generally been quite good. The emerging talent team provide ongoing support to help graduates develop in their roles. I have been able to take on responsibility earlier than some of my friends working for other firms, and this has helped me build confidence and technical knowledge faster than I expected.

My main responsibility is to manage, or assist managing, packages of work, mostly looking after the quality and time points of the project management 'triangle'. I also help with internal and external reporting, building accreditations, and project close-out. I find the reporting and risk management elements of my role the most enjoyable because they're a bit more strategic.

My role gives me a lot of scope to contribute and take ownership of certain tasks and workstreams.

The salary is fairly good, and the pay progression is better than most graduate jobs.
Private health and dental are a plus.

The role I'm in is slightly different to the role I was initially accepted for, meaning that my career path looks a little different than planned. I don't anticipate this being a significant barrier to achieving my career goals and the varied experience may actually be more of a help than a hindrance.

The emerging talent team is great - we have a dedicated graduate HR contact who arranges our training and serves as a point of contact for any queries. Graduates are also allocated a buddy, usually on our projects, who provides informal guidance. My line manager takes an active interest in my development.

For now, my work-life balance is quite good. Whilst I sometimes stay past my contracted finishing time, this isn't an expectation and is the exception rather than the rule. However, there isn't much scope from working from home and, when this project comes to an end, I may have to commute significantly further which would have a negative impact on my work-life balance.

Generally good, although construction management has a less diverse workforce than other sectors and Mace Construct is no exception here (especially for on-site teams).

There are highly visible campaigns celebrating Pride, neurodiversity awareness week and similar events. The company historically had employee resource groups such as 'Pride at Mace' but the status of these groups is unclear post-demerger.
