Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mace Construct?

Overall, my experience at Mace Construct has been extremely positive and rewarding. As someone who joined the graduate scheme without a construction background, I was initially unsure how steep the learning curve would be. However, I quickly found that the support available across the business made the transition much easier than expected.
The people have been the standout highlight of my experience so far. Everyone has been approachable, welcoming, and willing to take the time to answer questions and share their knowledge, regardless of their role or seniority. This has helped me build confidence, develop my understanding of the industry, and take on increasing levels of responsibility.
Working on the Oxford Science Park project has given me exposure to a wide range of commercial and operational activities, from subcontractor management and payment processes to scope reviews and project delivery challenges. The responsibility I've been given as a graduate has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience and contribute meaningfully to the project team.
Overall, Mace has provided a supportive environment to learn, develop, and grow professionally, and it has given me a strong foundation for a future career in construction.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As a Commercial Graduate, my main responsibilities include supporting the commercial management of the project, reviewing subcontractor quotations, preparing payment notices, managing change through instructions and variations, and working with subcontractors to clarify scope and resolve commercial queries. I also support procurement activities and help ensure that costs are managed effectively throughout the project lifecycle.
The element of the role I enjoy most is the variety. No two days are the same, and I get exposure to both the commercial and operational sides of construction. I particularly enjoy working with different stakeholders across the project team and subcontractors to solve problems and find practical solutions.
Coming from a non-construction background, I've also enjoyed the continuous learning aspect of the role. Every day is an opportunity to develop my knowledge of the industry, and I've found that the responsibility given to graduates at Mace has helped me build confidence and develop professionally much quicker than I expected.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

4/5
My role gives me a strong opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the project and feel valued as part of the team. As a graduate, I've been trusted with real responsibilities rather than simply observing, which has allowed me to contribute to commercial processes and support project delivery from an early stage.
I regularly work with project teams, subcontractors, and senior colleagues, and my input is encouraged and considered. This has helped me build confidence and develop professionally. The supportive nature of the team means that while there is always help available when needed, there is also a level of trust that allows me to take ownership of tasks and develop my skills.
Coming from a non-construction background, I particularly appreciate how approachable and supportive everyone has been. The willingness of colleagues to share their knowledge and provide guidance has made me feel like a valued member of the team and has played a significant role in my development so far.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

4/5
I believe my compensation package fairly reflects my role and responsibilities as a graduate. Alongside salary, the benefits, development opportunities, and support provided by Mace add significant value. I particularly appreciate the investment in professional development and the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and responsibility early in my career, which makes the overall package feel competitive and rewarding.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I feel my role is preparing me very well for my future career. Since joining Mace, I've been given exposure to a wide range of commercial and project activities, allowing me to develop both technical knowledge and practical experience in a live construction environment.
The responsibility I've been trusted with has helped me build confidence, improve my commercial awareness, and develop key skills such as communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and decision-making. Working closely with experienced colleagues and subcontractors has also given me valuable insight into how projects are delivered from both a commercial and operational perspective.
Coming from a non-construction background, I've been particularly pleased with how much I've learned in a relatively short space of time. The support from colleagues, combined with the opportunities to take ownership of tasks, has accelerated my development and given me a strong foundation for a long-term career within the construction industry.
Overall, I feel the role is equipping me with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to progress confidently in my career and take on increasing levels of responsibility in the future.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

4/5
I would rate it highly. Through both formal training and my day-to-day role, I have had plenty of opportunities to develop new skills and build on existing ones. The combination of structured learning through the graduate programme and hands-on experience on a live project has accelerated my development and helped me gain confidence in my role.
Day-to-day, I've developed my commercial awareness, communication skills, stakeholder management, and understanding of construction processes. I've also been given opportunities to take ownership of tasks and work with a range of colleagues and subcontractors, which has strengthened my problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
Coming from a non-construction background, I've been particularly impressed by how much I've learned since joining Mace. The support from colleagues and the variety of work I've been exposed to have allowed me to develop quickly and continuously expand my knowledge of the industry.
Overall, I feel the role and graduate programme have provided an excellent platform for both personal and professional development, and I can see a clear progression in my skills and confidence since joining the business.
