Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
The primary expectation we are held to is to learn, to achieve this we are moved around different placements within departments within the company for 3-6 months each. We'll start each placement with the basics, i.e. getting to know the team and shadowing colleagues to learn about their responsibilities and how they fit into the wider businesses obligations/objectives. For example some will be more legislation orientated roles where the team ensures the business complies with nuclear rules and guidelines (ONR, DNSR licensing conditions), whereas others will be more focussed on the safe manufacture and design of components. After an initial period of pure learning we are then eased into out own tasks/projects which we are expected to undertake independently, with support available when required. These tasks are varied and depend on the department, I have done various reports, inspections as well as chemical analysis throughout my time so far.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Very enjoyable overall, due to the nature of juggling a full time role, a part time degree as well as preparing for the end point assessment at the end of the scheme it can get chaotic at times. However the business provides ample support during the more intensive times therefore you're always given sufficient time to get everything done. The work and company objective we're working towards is an interesting task which feels meaningful.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Alongside developing the typical academic skills expected through university, the workplace has proved to be an invaluable asset in applying techniques and developing them. Some of the more notable ones which are widely used across any industry are writing reports, organising meetings and projects as well as applying critical thinking to solve any issues that crop up.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Placements are planned out and structured in a way which gives us a wide breadth of experience across the business and allows us to learn about the businesses different obligations as a nuclear licensed site. We are also given a structures approach to the end point assessment and are incentivised to prepare evidence well in advance to ensure a smooth transition off the scheme at the end.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Regular meeting/check ins with functional leads to address any concerns, major events e.g. uni exams are anticipated in advance and suitable supports put in place to reduce stress.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Weekly day release to specialist apprentice college to complete degree, modules are taught in smaller groups of around 20 compared to typical university so support is much more abundant.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Soft skills developed during coursework are very actively and frequently used, background knowledge on reactor physics is useful in everyday role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Lots of socials held, ranging from sports socials to nights out, along with hikes in the local areas. STRECH activities within working hours are encouraged, such activities are mainly those such as career outreach events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Major company with very well developed scheme, ample benefits and opportunity for progression.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be genuine, don't just try to say what you think the interviewers want to hear, try to stand back and take an objective look at your experience/hobbies and link them to the company behaviours no matter what they may be. Remember, at this stage the company isn't expected a full fledged engineer, they're looking for someone with an interest and can confidently show some evidence of critical thinking/logical reasoning.
