Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a Junior Energy Manager, I support the effective management and reduction of energy consumption across buildings and operations. My role focuses on monitoring energy performance, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements, and supporting wider sustainability and carbon‑reduction objectives. Working closely with senior energy managers, facilities teams, and external suppliers, I help ensure energy is used efficiently, costs are controlled, and compliance with relevant energy and environmental regulations is maintained.
On a day‑to‑day basis, my work typically involves:
-Monitoring and analysing energy consumption using energy management systems, meter data, and spreadsheets to identify trends, anomalies, and areas of inefficiency.
-Supporting energy reporting, including producing summaries of energy usage, costs, and carbon emissions for internal teams and management.
-Assisting with energy efficiency initiatives, such as behavioural change campaigns, building optimisation, and low‑cost or no‑cost energy savings measures.
-Liaising with facilities management teams and contractors to investigate high energy use, resolve issues, and support maintenance or improvement works.
-Helping ensure compliance with energy‑related legislation and schemes (such as meter accuracy, data submissions, and audits).
-Supporting renewable energy and decarbonisation projects, including data collection, performance monitoring, and project documentation.
-Maintaining accurate records of meters, assets, energy invoices, and project data.
-Developing technical knowledge through training, apprenticeship coursework, and on‑the‑job learning.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
The course modules and studying aspect were thoroughly enjoyable! the modules are varied and there are different areas that you get to study and then practically apply to your workplace. for example some modules I studied are below:
-Heat transfer (rules of physics and how heat moves and escapes through a building, U-values/K-values/R-values calculations also combine a mathematical element)
-Heating, Cooling Lights - exploring physical system plants like HVAC, boiler systems etc and how these can be optimised to reduce energy usage.
-Compliance, Legislation, Procurement and Tariffs - studying the legislative frameworks and what this means for disclosures, the type of evidence we must collect etc. Procurement and Tariffs focuses on the purchasing side of sustainability and energy e.g. purchasing/investing in renewable energy, the influence geopolitical events can have on market prices showing the importance of forward hedging to secure a good market price that is not subject to a volatile market that you could encounter if you are purchasing on a short-term basis
-Behaviour Change
The psychology behind behaviour, habits, mindsets and how we can encourage people to make better decisions of their own accord. It highlights how sustainability on a broader scale, requires a group effort and one of these ways, is by implementing better behaviour that, when adopted can have positive effects for example closing blinds during warm months to prevent solar gain which requires more cooling demand and therefore uses more energy.
These are a few examples of the modules I studied. I found my course to be well-varied, interesting, broad and applicable to tie in practically to my workplace. A good and supportive team at PM have also connected me with the right people across the business (e.g. facilities managers, on-site engineers, external contractors, internal auditors) to gain insight into how different jobs link together to create a cohesive strategy to energy use and sustainability as a whole.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have developed many skills in a vast number of areas such as:
-Analytical and data‑handling skills
-Problem‑solving and attention to detail
-Communication skills when working with non‑technical stakeholders
-Understanding of energy management, sustainability, and carbon reduction in a real‑world environment

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The course delivery is 13 months with one lecture a month that lasts around 2.5 hours. Based off the lecture, I would complete a task that consists of two components: a theory task (research based, reading task, data-picking task to name a few) and a practical application task (applying what I've learnt in the lecture and theory task to my workplace specifically - could be in the form of auditing an area and suggesting improvements to the plant, collecting carbon footprint data, u-value assessment of different materials used in the building structure etc)

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My manager was super supportive and helpful throughout my entire course! It definitely made all the difference as I was comfortable to ask lots of questions (even if they seemed silly). I was put in contact with the right people especially when my modules required me to visit areas of the building that need assistance of an engineer. Through this I have gained a good network of people who are very skilled in various areas. I was given a good balance of work so I would have enough time to complete my coursework, log off the job hours, whilst still working on other internal projects.
During my exam period, I was extremely well-supported to focus on revision for my 3-part EPA (End Point Assessment). Useful website links/videos/articles etc were shared with me to broaden my knowledge and understanding of energy management in a corporate setting. I am really happy with how supportive my team were since joining the company!!!

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

2/5
This is not necessarily reflective of the training provider as a whole but once you pass through your Gateway and the training provider has signed off on all your documents, it is quite independent as the assessors contact you directly to book in dates etc. The exam period lasted 3 months to complete 3 components and in that time I don't recall hearing from my training provider. Granted my actual tutor left the company, but the other contacts at the academy were not really in contact aside from the document-signing admin bits on their part.
However, whilst he was there, my tutor was super helpful and always offered his support if it was needed

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
The course directly applies to my job so adds a lot of theory based knowledge behind a way of operations that has been maintained and optimised for many years. It provides a strong base level of knowledge which is further strengthened from the practical application through the job. I worked on many internal projects that touched different sustainability areas e.g. procurement, energy consumption reviews and optimisation opportunities and many more. My qualification definitely helps me to perform better in my role because I can use what I have learnt to implement sustainability policies and help to achieve reductions in line with approved targets.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are a variety of events to get involved in:
-Learning opportunities and self-development (online sessions that can cover lots of areas of personal development e.g. stress management, neurodivergency and the workplace, improving productivity)
-Sports (rugby)
-other (Choir, book club, other social and networking events)
