Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

During my programme, I worked across two teams the Contact Platform Team and the Application and Service Management Team. This role gave me exposure to both customer-facing technology platforms and the operational processes that support business-critical applications.
Within the Contact Platform Team, I supported the day-to-day management and improvement of contact centre technologies, gaining hands-on experience with incident handling, system changes, and collaboration with multiple stakeholders to ensure reliable service delivery. Alongside this, my work with the Application and Service Management Team focused on application support, service monitoring, and understanding IT service management practices, including incident, problem, and change management. Working across both teams helped me develop a strong understanding of how technical platforms and service management processes work together to deliver effective and resilient IT services.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed the variety of work offered throughout my placement, which allowed me to gain exposure to different teams, technologies, and ways of working. The business culture was welcoming and supportive, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, learning, and professional development, which made it a positive and motivating environment to work in. While the experience was valuable in developing my practical and professional skills, I would have appreciated greater alignment between my Master’s studies a closer link between role specific and academic learning especially for assignments would have enhanced the relevance of the placement and transferability.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I developed a wide range of new skills that I had not initially anticipated based on the focus of my studies which is both a pro and a con. While my academic background provided a strong theoretical foundation, the placement exposed me to practical, transferable skills such as stakeholder communication, operational problem-solving, service management processes, and working within live production environments. These experiences broadened my understanding of how technology is applied in a business context and helped me build competencies that extend beyond my formal curriculum contributing significantly to my professional growth and readiness for the workplace. However for a Level 7 and Maters level this was difficult to really utilise that further development as the roles didn't solicit high levels of leadership.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Overall, I have enjoyed my placement, gaining value from both the academic elements of the programme and the opportunity to work closely with technical teams at Bupa. The practical experience was rewarding and contributed positively to my professional development. However, at times there was a lack of alignment between my academic assignments and my workplace responsibilities, which made it challenging to identify relevant context for certain pieces of coursework. While I was aware that combining a Master’s degree with an apprenticeship would be demanding, the intensity increased significantly toward the end of the programme, particularly when balancing academic requirements alongside work responsibilities.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a high level of support from my employer, particularly from my managers, who have consistently been approachable, understanding, and supportive throughout my placement. They have actively encouraged my development, provided guidance which has played a key role in helping me balance work responsibilities alongside my studies.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have received good support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. Support has been readily available when required, with queries and concerns typically addressed promptly, particularly through communication channels such as Microsoft Teams. This timely and accessible support has been helpful in maintaining progress and confidence throughout the programme.

Throughout my time at the organisation, I experienced a genuine commitment to employee wellbeing, with managers and colleagues providing consistent encouragement and guidance. The flexibility offered, particularly when balancing work with academic responsibilities, made it a positive and sustainable environment to learn and develop. This combination of support, flexibility, and a people‑focused culture makes Bupa a rewarding place to work.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bupa?

My main piece of advice to anyone applying to Bupa would be to be yourself. The company values diversity and inclusivity, and there is a strong emphasis on creating an environment where people feel comfortable being authentic. Showing genuine enthusiasm, openness, and a willingness to learn aligns well with Bupa’s culture and is likely to be appreciated throughout the application process.
