Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My current role as a resuscitation officer consists of delivering teaching for courses for deterioration and basic life support to advanced life support for both adult and paediatric. I am also a member of the cardiac arrest team, and perform audits on cardiac arrest processes. The apprenticeship is developing my skills and knowledge in leadership and management in healthcare.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The content of the Masters is excellent and I enjoy it. However the apprenticeship log and portfolio is an added stress to working full time and trying to complete a part time Masters. It would be better if we were able to have more time during work hours to work on assignments etc, as currently I am being told that it is confined to my own time or the 6 hours per day.

Learning lots of new skills and developing existing skills in leadership and management, boosting confidence also.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is well organised and structured, however can be too much while trying to work full time. Having 6 hours per week does not feel enough time to complete Masters work and apprenticeship work, as logging and portfolio work takes up alot of time. Would like more protected time.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have been given one day per week for uni work which is brilliant, however I do feel its not really enough as its Masters work as well as apprenticeship work. Not really had much involvement with apprenticeship team but when I have had queries they have been helpful.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

It is enhancing my skills and knowledge in leadership however I am limited due to my role, if I were to move on to a leadership role it would benefit me greatly.

Would you recommend The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to a friend?

Why?

Although there are talks of change, there is still issues with culture and silent racism within the Trust. It is very difficult to progress as a person who is a single parent from a BAME background and I have been made to feel as if I need to focus on my family life rather than supporting me with flexibility to be able to progress in leadership roles. I have felt more supported in other Trusts. However the opportunities for learning are great, and being able to complete my masters through higher apprenticeship is an opportunity I have welcomed, but being able to practice the learning through my current role is proving difficult.
