Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day to day basis, I help dentists carry out treatment to patients. This includes setting up the surgery, setting up for treatment, chaperoning the patient and also being emotionally supportive to patients throughout treatment.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship so far. I have been able to go on a lot of departments allowing me to get a view on how each department is different and how they work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned and developed a lot of new skills whilst doing this apprenticeship such as clinical skills within the workplace, organisation and problem solving as some thinks may not work to how you like. I've also improved on my communication skills allowing me to help patients when they may feel worried or anxious during dental treatment.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship is very organised and well structured. You get to go on loads of departments and see how each department works. Its interesting as no department is the same allowing you to get new experiences each time you go onto a new department

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have received a lot of support from my employers throughout the past year. They always help if I or anybody ever needs help or support in anything.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have also received a lot of support from my training providers throughout the past year. They are always willing to explain to me how things work and show me how things work if I'm unsure.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that my qualification helps me perform better in my role as a apprentice dental nurse as during teaching, it helps me understand treatment more such as endodontics, radiology, oral surgery and prosthodontics

Why?

I would recommend people to Newcastle dental hospital as everyone is always willing to help you if you needed support. The hospital offers a range of departments so its nice to have a placement on each department as this allows you to get a insight of how each department works and how that department helps patients.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust?

I would recommend that you are able to work in various size groups as some departments are bigger than other departments. I think also you should have good communication skills as a lot of patients may be anxious about receiving treatment. However also make sure you have good communication skills when working with other members of staff as things can go wrong if communication isn't happening
