Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as an EY Auditor in the Financial Services practice in Canary Wharf while completing a Level 7 Accountancy and Taxation Professional apprenticeship. On a day-to-day basis, I support audits of financial services clients by performing audit testing, reviewing data, and working with teams and clients to gather evidence and understand their business. Alongside client work, I study for the ACA qualification and apply my learning directly to real audit engagements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme. It offers a strong balance between practical, hands-on audit experience and structured study, which helps reinforce my learning. Working on real Financial Services clients has accelerated my professional development, while the support from my team and the variety of work keep the role engaging and rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have developed a range of new and existing skills through the programme. I’ve strengthened my technical audit and accounting knowledge, particularly by applying exam learning to real Financial Services audits. I’ve also improved Excel and data analysis skills, alongside developing professional judgement, communication, and stakeholder management through regular interaction with clients and senior team members. The programme has significantly increased my confidence, organisation, and ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively while maintaining audit quality.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is very well organised and structured. There is a clear framework balancing client work with study, including set exam pathways, planned study leave, and regular progress reviews. The support from EY, including counsellors, engagement teams, and the student experience team, helps ensure expectations are clear and that work and study demands are manageable throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a high level of support from EY throughout the programme. This includes regular guidance from my counsellor and engagement teams, dedicated support from the Student Experience and Apprenticeship teams, and access to planned study leave and learning resources. There are regular progress reviews and clear channels to raise questions or concerns, which helps ensure both my work and studies are well supported.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a strong level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. First Intuition provides clear video explanations and structured teaching, which help break down complex topics effectively. I also have access to the ICAEW website, including BibliU, which offers hundreds of practice questions per exam and comprehensive workbooks covering all syllabus areas. In addition, college learning is flexible, with options for in‑person classes, online courses, or self‑study, allowing me to tailor my learning to fit around work commitments. This combination of teaching, exam practice, written resources, and flexible study options is very effective in supporting both my learning and exam preparation.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification supports my role very effectively. The teaching provided by my training provider helps me build a strong understanding of accounting and audit principles, which I can apply directly to my day‑to‑day audit work. Topics covered in college and through self‑study, such as financial reporting, auditing standards, and professional judgement, regularly link back to tasks I perform on engagements. This connection between study and practical experience has improved my confidence, technical ability, and overall performance in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra‑curricular activities to get involved in at EY. These include social events, professional networking opportunities, volunteering initiatives, and employee networks, which encourage collaboration and engagement beyond client work. There are also interest‑based and wellbeing activities, as well as opportunities to take part in social impact projects. These activities help build relationships across teams and offices, support personal development, and contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend EY to a friend. EY offers strong professional development opportunities, high‑quality training and support, and early exposure to real client work. The firm provides a good balance between learning and practical experience, with clear career progression and a supportive environment that encourages growth, collaboration, and development. The variety of work, structured apprenticeship support, and inclusive culture make it a strong place to start and build a long‑term career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
My advice would be to prepare thoroughly and understand both EY and the role you are applying for. Applicants should be aware of EY’s current goals, priorities, and recent deals, as this demonstrates genuine interest and commercial awareness. It’s also helpful to coffee chat with current EY employees to gain insight into the firm and, where possible, secure a reference, as the application process has multiple stages. Preparation for assessments is important, including numerical tests and scenarios focused on how to act professionally in the workplace. Teamwork is especially important, as I experienced a group interview stage with four candidates working together via Teams, so being able to collaborate, communicate, and contribute effectively is key. For in‑person interviews, candidates should clearly understand what the role involves, why they are a good fit, and come prepared with thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer.
