Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
I work as a Digital/AI Support Apprentice in BBC News, where I support journalists and editorial teams to use AI tools safely, responsibly and effectively in their day‑to‑day work. My role involves testing, building and improving AI‑powered tools and workflows that support news production, including transcription, summarisation and chatbot experiments. I work closely with engineers, product managers and journalists to gather feedback, identify problems and translate editorial needs into practical technical solutions. I also document my work and attend regular stand‑ups and sprint planning sessions and reflect on my learning as part of my apprenticeship, linking my experience to required knowledge, skills and behaviours.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme, particularly the course element, as it gives me structured time to step back and understand the wider context behind my day‑to‑day work. The learning modules help me build strong foundations in AI, digital systems and professional practices, which I can then apply directly in my role. I value the balance between theory and practical tasks, as well as the opportunity to reflect on my progress and link what I am learning to real workplace scenarios. Overall, the course complements my role well and supports my development both technically and professionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes, I have developed a range of new skills and strengthened existing ones during my programme. I have significantly improved my understanding of AI, particularly how different tools can be tested, evaluated and applied responsibly in a newsroom context. Through the course and my role, I have gained knowledge of digital architecture, including how systems interact as well as key principles around security and data storage. I have also developed my communication skills by working closely with my colleagues, taking part in stand‑ups and contributing to collaborative problem‑solving.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My programme is well organised and clearly structured, with a good balance between planned course learning and practical workplace experience, which makes it easy to understand expectations and track progress.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer, with regular guidance from my manager, scheme advisor and team, access to learning opportunities and ongoing support to help me develop and progress in my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive good support from my training provider with clear guidance, access to learning resources and regular support when working towards my EPA.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel it supports me well in my role by reinforcing what I do day to day and helping me better understand the skills, concepts and best practices I use at work, which makes me more confident and effective.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Absolutely, there are plenty of extra‑curricular opportunities available at work. I'm aware of many social, networking and professional activities that apprentices can get involved in (community events, team sessions and wider BBC initiatives).
