Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
A key part of my role is managing and promoting health and safety on site. This includes reviewing and briefing RAMS, maintaining health and safety records, ensuring site inductions are completed, and monitoring works to identify and address potential risks. I regularly engage with operatives and subcontractors to reinforce safe working practices and contribute to building a strong safety culture.
I am also involved in site logistics and planning, helping to coordinate deliveries, manage access routes, and ensure materials and plant are available when required. This requires close collaboration with subcontractors and forward planning to avoid clashes or delays to the programme.
On a daily basis, I support the running of planning and coordination meetings, such as Daily Activity Briefings (DABS), where upcoming works are discussed, risks are highlighted, and responsibilities are clearly communicated. I contribute to planning ahead by looking at short-term and medium-term activities, identifying constraints, and supporting the construction team in preparing for upcoming works.
Overall, my role combines site-based management, planning, communication, and problem-solving, allowing me to gain hands-on experience while contributing positively to the successful delivery of the project.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
One key skill I have developed is health and safety management. For example, I have learnt how to review and brief RAMS, ensure operatives are inducted correctly, and monitor site activities to identify unsafe practices. By carrying out safety checks and having safety conversations with subcontractors, I have improved my understanding of risk assessment and my confidence in challenging unsafe behaviour.
I have also gained planning and coordination skills, particularly through my involvement in Daily Activity Briefings (DABS). I have learned how to plan works ahead, communicate daily tasks clearly to the workforce, and identify potential constraints such as access issues or conflicting trades. This has helped me understand how short‑term planning supports the overall programme.
Another skill I have developed is communication and teamwork. I now regularly liaise with subcontractors, site supervisors, and managers to coordinate activities, confirm logistics, and resolve issues. For example, I have assisted with organising deliveries and managing site logistics, ensuring materials arrive at the correct time to avoid delays or clashes.
Finally, I have improved my organisational and problem‑solving skills by managing documentation, supporting meetings, and responding to day‑to‑day site challenges. This includes keeping records up to date, following up actions from meetings, and adapting plans when site conditions change.
Overall, these new skills have increased my confidence on site and helped prepare me for greater responsibility as I progress towards becoming a fully qualified Construction Manager.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
How much support do you receive from your employer?
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
Within the university, our lecturers also provide support through teaching sessions and feedback on assignments. The feedback given helps me understand my performance and identify areas for improvement in my work. While there is support available when required, it encourages independent learning alongside guidance, which supports my development throughout the course. Overall, the training provider offers structured support that helps me progress through my apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
In addition to social and team‑building events, Mace also provides a wide range of training and development sessions, both online and in person. These sessions cover a variety of work‑related topics to support our professional development, as well as personal development training. For example, we attended a session on managing our money, which I found particularly beneficial and useful outside of work. Overall, these opportunities help create a supportive and engaging environment while encouraging learning, networking, and personal growth.
