Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
I am an Apprentice Construction Manager, supporting the delivery of construction works on site while developing the skills required to manage projects safely, efficiently, and effectively. My role involves assisting the site management team with the day-to-day coordination of activities, ensuring that work is carried out in line with programme requirements, quality standards, and health and safety legislation.
A key part of my role is managing and promoting health and safety on site. This includes reviewing and briefing RAMS, maintaining health and safety records, ensuring site inductions are completed, and monitoring works to identify and address potential risks. I regularly engage with operatives and subcontractors to reinforce safe working practices and contribute to building a strong safety culture.
I am also involved in site logistics and planning, helping to coordinate deliveries, manage access routes, and ensure materials and plant are available when required. This requires close collaboration with subcontractors and forward planning to avoid clashes or delays to the programme.
On a daily basis, I support the running of planning and coordination meetings, such as Daily Activity Briefings (DABS), where upcoming works are discussed, risks are highlighted, and responsibilities are clearly communicated. I contribute to planning ahead by looking at short-term and medium-term activities, identifying constraints, and supporting the construction team in preparing for upcoming works.
Overall, my role combines site-based management, planning, communication, and problem-solving, allowing me to gain hands-on experience while contributing positively to the successful delivery of the project.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I am really enjoying my role as an Apprentice Construction Manager as it gives me hands-on experience within a live construction environment and allows me to be actively involved in the day-to-day delivery of the project. I enjoy the variety the role offers, from managing health and safety and site logistics to communicating with subcontractors and supporting planning activities. Being involved in meetings such as DABS has helped me understand how work is planned, coordinated, and controlled on site, which I find particularly rewarding. I also enjoy the responsibility that comes with the role, as it challenges me to think ahead, solve problems, and continuously develop my technical knowledge and management skills. Overall, the role is helping me build confidence and progress toward my long-term goal of becoming a Construction Manager.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
During my role as an Apprentice Construction Manager, I have developed several new skills that have supported both my professional growth and my contribution to the project.
One key skill I have developed is health and safety management. For example, I have learnt how to review and brief RAMS, ensure operatives are inducted correctly, and monitor site activities to identify unsafe practices. By carrying out safety checks and having safety conversations with subcontractors, I have improved my understanding of risk assessment and my confidence in challenging unsafe behaviour.
I have also gained planning and coordination skills, particularly through my involvement in Daily Activity Briefings (DABS). I have learned how to plan works ahead, communicate daily tasks clearly to the workforce, and identify potential constraints such as access issues or conflicting trades. This has helped me understand how short‑term planning supports the overall programme.
Another skill I have developed is communication and teamwork. I now regularly liaise with subcontractors, site supervisors, and managers to coordinate activities, confirm logistics, and resolve issues. For example, I have assisted with organising deliveries and managing site logistics, ensuring materials arrive at the correct time to avoid delays or clashes.
Finally, I have improved my organisational and problem‑solving skills by managing documentation, supporting meetings, and responding to day‑to‑day site challenges. This includes keeping records up to date, following up actions from meetings, and adapting plans when site conditions change.
Overall, these new skills have increased my confidence on site and helped prepare me for greater responsibility as I progress towards becoming a fully qualified Construction Manager.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The apprenticeship scheme I am on is well structured and supportive, providing clear guidance throughout the journey while allowing flexibility to balance work, learning, and assessments. The programme is organised in a way that breaks down the requirements into manageable stages, which helps me understand what is expected at each point and plan my development effectively. I am given dedicated time to complete off-the-job learning, coursework, and portfolio evidence alongside my day-to-day site responsibilities. This support makes it easier to manage the various tasks involved in the apprenticeship without impacting my contribution on site. Overall, the structure of the programme supports steady progression, encourages skills development, and helps me stay on track while gaining valuable practical experience.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer, and this has played a key role in my development throughout the apprenticeship. Everyone within the company is supportive and approachable, and they always make time to explain things if I am unsure or need further clarification. Whether it is site-based tasks, technical knowledge, or understanding wider project processes, I feel comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance. I am also well supported when managing my workload, with encouragement given to balance my day-to-day responsibilities alongside my apprenticeship requirements. Overall, the support from my employer has helped build my confidence, improve my skills, and continue progressing within my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider and university while working towards my qualifications. We are allocated a specific university contact who supports us with monitoring our off‑the‑job training hours. I have scheduled meetings with them to review my progress, check that my hours are being recorded correctly, and discuss how I am managing my apprenticeship alongside my university coursework. These meetings are helpful in keeping me on track and providing general guidance where needed.
Within the university, our lecturers also provide support through teaching sessions and feedback on assignments. The feedback given helps me understand my performance and identify areas for improvement in my work. While there is support available when required, it encourages independent learning alongside guidance, which supports my development throughout the course. Overall, the training provider offers structured support that helps me progress through my apprenticeship.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification through my training provider supports me in performing better in my role, particularly by strengthening my understanding of construction management principles and site processes. The topics covered at university help link theory to what I experience day‑to‑day on site, such as health and safety, planning, coordination, and management responsibilities. This has helped me better understand the reasons behind site procedures and improved my confidence when supporting decision‑making and discussions on site.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are many extra‑curricular opportunities to get involved in at my workplace, which I have really enjoyed. For example, last year Mace hired out The CUBE in London, where apprentices from all years worked together in teams to complete a series of challenges. This was a great experience as it allowed us to collaborate, problem‑solve, and network with apprentices at different stages of their journey. It was especially valuable to speak with apprentices from other years and projects, as it gave me a better understanding of how their day‑to‑day roles differ and how the apprenticeship progresses over time.
In addition to social and team‑building events, Mace also provides a wide range of training and development sessions, both online and in person. These sessions cover a variety of work‑related topics to support our professional development, as well as personal development training. For example, we attended a session on managing our money, which I found particularly beneficial and useful outside of work. Overall, these opportunities help create a supportive and engaging environment while encouraging learning, networking, and personal growth.
