Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
My work is mainly technical as an application developer. Day to day, I work in an agile team on client projects, taking part in daily stand-ups to share updates and plan my work. I complete tasks from the backlog such as developing new features, fixing bugs, and working on other development-related tickets.
I use a mix of programming languages, as well as cloud and AI technologies depending on the project, and collaborate closely with my team to deliver solutions efficiently while continuing to develop my technical skills.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

3/5
I really enjoy the work side of my programme, especially the hands-on experience I get as an application developer working on real client projects. I find the technical work engaging and enjoy being part of a team where I can contribute to building features and solve technical problems.
However, balancing the work responsibilities with the university side can sometimes be challenging, particularly when managing deadlines. Overall, I do enjoy the programme, as it allows me to gain practical experience while working towards a degree.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt and developed a wide range of skills throughout my programme. From a technical perspective, I’ve gained experience working with multiple programming languages, as well as cloud and AI technologies, and have developed a better understanding of development practices.
I have also improved my soft skills, particularly teamwork and communication, through collaborating with others in an agile environment and taking part in demos.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

IBM tends to have a very welcoming environment especially for early professionals.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?

I would recommend doing research into IBM, especially its achievements and areas where it has innovated, so you not only understand the company but can also show that you genuinely care about the work IBM is doing, which recruiters really value. During the application process, it’s also important to show that you have a growth mindset and a genuine eagerness to learn, as this is something recruiters particularly look for in early professionals.
Being open to new challenges and showing an interest in developing your skills can really help you stand out.
