Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
My role includes technical operation of various systems and equipment that are needed for broadcast, offering support to the team and ensuring our programmes are of the highest technical quality and comply with the law and regulatory bodies. This includes, camera operating, editing packages for the programme, on-location filming, working in the gallery, directing and using automated systems, operating and adjusting audio, ingesting content in varying formats and booking external lines for interviews.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I thoroughly enjoy the variety of responsibilities the role contains, challenging me in different ways day-to-day and consequently broadening my skills and experience in many areas of the live broadcast industry.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Everything i have developed whilst on my apprenticeship has been new learning. I didn't begin with any prior knowledge or experience in the broadcast industry so I have gained a wealth of knowledge since starting, from how to operate a studio camera, to different file formats and codecs, to how to use editing software! Everything I have learnt so far has been transformative to my career progress and is transferable to a multitude of roles within and outside the broadcast industry.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
From the start I was given clear timetables and schedules so i could prepare for my training. There is a great balance between necessary areas of development and additional areas of interest, to support me in my growth and learning whilst providing a solid framework to meet my apprenticeship and workplace goals.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
The support and guidance I receive here is incredible. Since day 1 my schedule has been organised by my managers, ensuring i am getting the best opportunities and training. They have rotated me around many different departments to gain a thorough understanding of my role within the larger team and my managers are always there to help me organise placement or shadowing opportunities when they arise. Consideration is always taken to coordinate my area of training or shadowing with my learning provider topics, to give me the best chance of understanding and succeeding.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
Personally and academically they have been very supportive and helpful from the beginning. There is a huge amount of signposting, resources and opportunities for 1-to-1 calls. There is always access to recordings of lessons and tutorials to reflect back on for assignments and i feel the tutors from the training provider are so invested in my progress and learning.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification provides a broader understanding of the areas of responsibility that i face in my work placement role. I am provided with not only information that applies to the industry that I am currently working in, but also the wider TV and film industry. It has offered well broken down modules, with a good amount of hands on practical tasks and experience, which only enhance my capabilities within my role. I feel i have more rounded understanding of Sound Mixing, Camera Operating, File Formats and overall Live Broadcast Programmes due to the NFTS apprenticeship scheme.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

3/5
There has been 1 or 2 small socials at my local base which I have attended, however at the bigger bases, such as London, there are many regular ones that I am notified of.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because it is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, skills and learning within a globally recognised organisation, allowing you to try your hand at many different areas of the industry and see where your skills and interests lie.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?

GENUINELY be yourself, they want to meet the real you, so let your enthusiasm and passions show, and if you don't know the answer, that's really okay! You're an apprentice, you're not supposed to have all the answers already! Give some time to do your research into the role and understand the BBC Values, think about how they apply to your daily life or work.
