Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
In my role as a level 3 Media Technical Operator apprentice with the BBC, I support the technical delivery of live and recorded content across a range of productions and departments. On a day-to-day basis, this involves assisting with studio and gallery setup, operating and monitoring broadcast equipment, and ensuring audio, visuals and lighting are of a high quality and being transmitted / recorded without any hitches.
I work closely with engineers, production teams, and other operators to maintain high technical standards and quickly resolve any issues that arise during live broadcasts or recordings... there's bound to be some hiccups along the way as it is show business...
My responsibilities also include rigging and de-rigging equipment, checking signal paths, preparing studios ahead of transmission, and supporting post-production workflows where required (e.g. making sure that they have the appropriate content to use in post edits such as camera and sound recordings).
Each day brings a different set of challenges depending on the programme or environment, which has helped me develop strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and attention to detail. The role combines hands-on technical work with teamwork and communication, allowing me to gain a well-rounded understanding of broadcast operations within a fast-paced and professional environment.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I enjoy my programme to a great extent. It has been really engaging, and I have appreciated the chance to learn directly on the job while developing practical skills in a fast-paced environment. The variety of work, the support from colleagues, and the opportunity to be part of live productions with trust given to you to handle more than coffee have made the apprenticeship genuinely enjoyable and rewarding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes, I have learned a lot of new skills and developed existing ones throughout the scheme. I have improved my technical knowledge of broadcast equipment: cameras, microphones, mixing consoles, lighting desks etc. as well as studio workflows, and I am becoming more confident in operating and supporting live production environments.
I have also developed existing skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation, problem-solving, and attention to detail especially when working under pressure during live broadcasts.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My programme is well organised and structured overall. The learning is planned in a clear way, with a good balance between on-the-job experience, support from colleagues, and opportunities to build my knowledge and skills step by step.
There is a clear progression in what I am learning, which helps me understand how each part of the role fits together. I also appreciate that tasks and responsibilities are introduced in a manageable way, so I can build confidence while still being challenged. The structure has made it easier to track my development and see how I am improving over time.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. My line managers and colleagues are approachable, and they are willing to answer questions, explain processes, and give guidance when I need it.
The support I receive helps me settle in, build confidence, and learn more effectively in a busy environment. I also get regular feedback, which helps me understand what I am doing well and where I can improve. Overall, I feel well supported both professionally and personally throughout the programme.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive strong support from my training provider for my qualifications. They deliver well-organised training sessions, accessible materials, and personalised feedback, which has helped me progress confidently towards completing my Level 3 standards.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
My qualification through the training provider helps me perform better in my role to a great extent. It provides the theoretical foundation and technical knowledge that directly applies to my daily tasks, such as understanding broadcast systems, signal management, and safety protocols in live production environments.
The structured learning reinforces what I experience on the job, filling in knowledge gaps and giving me confidence to handle equipment and troubleshoot issues more effectively.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities at the BBC, including social events like quizzes and team drinks, sports teams such as football and running clubs, and professional networking through BBC Academy sessions and apprentice groups.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend the BBC apprenticeship to a friend. The combination of hands-on experience in a world-class broadcast environment, strong support from colleagues and training providers, and clear progression has made it a rewarding opportunity for my professional growth.
The programme offers real responsibility from day one, exposure to live production challenges, and a structured path to develop technical skills that are directly applicable to a media career. While it can be fast-paced and demanding at times, the learning opportunities, team culture, and extra-curricular activities more than make up for it, giving you skills and connections that stand out on your CV.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?

I'd tell anyone applying to the BBC: if you have any doubts... go for it anyway! No one expects you to be perfect or have all the answers — that's exactly what the apprenticeship is for. Enjoy every moment, make connections across teams, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek support along the way. It's a fantastic opportunity that builds real skills and confidence in a supportive environment.
