Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an Industrial Placement Student, my role supports both project management and bid management activities within the business. On a day-to-day basis, I assist with planning, coordinating, and tracking projects to ensure they are delivered on time, within scope, and to budget. This involves supporting project managers with scheduling, preparing documentation, monitoring progress, and communicating with internal stakeholders.
Alongside this, I am actively involved in bid management, where I support the preparation and submission of bids and proposals. This includes gathering and organising information from different teams, helping to develop bid documentation, reviewing requirements, and ensuring submissions are compliant and delivered to deadlines. I also assist with maintaining bid trackers and improving internal processes.
Overall, the role gives me hands-on experience of managing projects and bids in a professional environment, developing strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills while gaining a practical understanding of how projects are won and delivered within the organisation.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant level of responsibility during my placement. Within bid management, I acted as Bid Manager on multiple occasions across different bids. In this role, I was responsible for coordinating inputs from various stakeholders, managing timelines, ensuring compliance with requirements, and overseeing the full bid submission process. This gave me valuable exposure to managing competing priorities and taking ownership of deliverables.
From a project management perspective, I was also trusted with client-facing responsibilities. I led client calls where I presented the current contractor status, provided progress updates, and proactively flagged risks or issues. This required clear communication, confidence, and a strong understanding of project details. Overall, the level of responsibility I was given allowed me to develop both my leadership and professional communication skills, while gaining practical experience in managing real projects and bids.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Bid management and coordination
I developed strong bid management skills by acting as Bid Manager on multiple bids. This included interpreting tender requirements, creating bid plans and timelines, coordinating inputs from technical, commercial, and operational teams, and ensuring submissions were compliant and delivered on time. I also improved my attention to detail through reviewing documents for quality, consistency, and alignment with client requirements.
Stakeholder and client communication
I significantly improved my professional communication skills by leading client calls and internal meetings. This involved clearly explaining current contractor status, presenting progress updates, and confidently raising risks or issues with both clients and senior stakeholders. This experience strengthened my ability to tailor messaging to different audiences and handle client queries professionally.
Project management skills
I developed practical project management skills by supporting the planning and delivery of live projects. This included tracking actions, monitoring progress against schedules, managing risks and issues, and supporting decision making. Leading parts of client interactions also helped me build confidence in taking ownership of tasks and outcomes.
Time management and prioritisation
Balancing multiple bids alongside project management responsibilities strengthened my ability to prioritise effectively, manage competing deadlines, and stay organised under pressure. I became more confident at planning my workload independently and adapting quickly when priorities changed.
Overall, the level of responsibility I was given helped me grow in confidence and accountability. Being trusted to manage bids and lead client discussions allowed me to develop a more proactive and professional approach to my work, while gaining a clear understanding of how projects are won and delivered in a real business environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement. My line manager provided consistent day-to-day support, regularly checking in on my workload, progress, and development. They were always approachable and willing to offer guidance, feedback, and clarification whenever needed.
In addition, I was supported by project and programme directors and other senior team members, particularly when working on bids and client-facing project management activities. Senior colleagues were actively involved in mentoring me, reviewing my work, and providing constructive feedback, which played a key role in my professional development.
Wellbeing was also a clear priority during my placement. My manager and the wider team regularly checked that I was coping well with my responsibilities and felt supported, ensuring I had the right balance between challenge and support. Overall, the guidance I received helped me build confidence, take on responsibility, and develop effectively in a professional working environment.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture during my placement was extremely positive and supportive. There was a strong emphasis on wellbeing, respect, and collaboration, which created a welcoming and motivating working environment. Throughout my time at the company, I never experienced any form of negativity or toxic behaviour; instead, the atmosphere was consistently professional, open, and inclusive.
Colleagues at all levels were approachable and willing to help, encouraging open communication and teamwork. Junior staff were valued and trusted, and there was a genuine interest in learning, development, and mutual support. Management placed clear importance on employee wellbeing, regularly checking in and ensuring that workloads were manageable.
Overall, the general atmosphere was extremely positive and supportive, making it an excellent environment for learning, development, and professional growth.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I greatly enjoyed my placement, as it allowed me to develop both professionally and personally. One of the most valuable aspects was broadening my knowledge of how to communicate effectively with different people across the business. I gained confidence in speaking with senior stakeholders and learned a great deal from working closely with them, particularly in understanding professional behaviours, decision‑making processes, and leadership approaches.
I also particularly enjoyed being given new tasks and challenges, as this encouraged continuous learning and allowed me to discover new areas of the business. The role enabled me to work closely with people from a wide range of teams and expertise across the company, which I found both engaging and rewarding.
In addition, I had the opportunity to take part in interesting site visits, including visits abroad. These experiences allowed me to observe live project environments, engage with different contractors, and gain first‑hand exposure to how projects are delivered on-site. Facing different working practices, stakeholders, and challenges greatly enhanced my understanding of the industry and added significant value to my placement experience.
Overall, the placement was extremely enjoyable and enriching, providing me with hands‑on experience, exposure to diverse perspectives, and a strong foundation for my future professional development.
