Product Control Intern Review

Both of my rotations were within the Product Control function, however my first rotation was focused on the Structured Products/Equities/Treasury team and my second was focused on the Flow Products team. During my two rotations, the main task at hand was P&L production - this included understanding the drivers of P&L for the desks being dealt with and investigating both unusual figures and discrepancies in flash P&L vs actual P&L.

It’s important to realise that once your internship is over, other team members will be picking up the workload for the departments you were responsible for. You’re helping to turn cogs in the business which need to be turned.
Furthermore, as an intern in Product Control, you’re responsible for emailing daily market commentary. This goes out to the EMEA CEO and recipients in the Americas and Asia.

Excel skills were definitely sharpened during my rotation - there were a lot of pivot tables being used and macros being built so you really got to build valuable fundamentals.
I also learned the importance of time management and prioritising different tasks - you have commitments and responsibilities to all of the desks you are dealing with and so it is important that every P&L is of high quality and delivered within a fair time frame.

You’re given a buddy during the internship, who will most likely be a recent graduate analyst. They’re essentially responsible for not only showing you the ropes, but they’re also there to provide you with whatever support you need.
For Product Control in particular, the team I was working with was full of individuals willing to help with whatever you need and were always willing to lend a hand.

The general sentiment of my intern cohort was that MUFG promoted a welcoming and open culture. No matter their seniority or position, I found that employees were almost always happy to meet up for a coffee chat or even provide you with the opportunity to shadow them on their desks to see the work they do.
In terms of all round culture, I’m not sure you could find much better.

I have massively enjoyed my internship at MUFG. In only 10 weeks, I really feel as though I found my place in the company. I never once felt like a box to be ticked or a number on paper, but rather I was taken in as a valued member of the team and allowed opportunities to challenge myself and to always learn.
