Global markets summer intern Review

I was an FX intern at MUFG. I undertook a variety of roles on the desk, including: writing a morning market newsflash from overnight, generating ideas for my mock trading portfolio, mini lessons with my buddy on FX products, building a dashboard with important economic metrics for the Global trading desks, networking across the bank and ad hoc tasks required by the desk.

Absolutely - more than I was expecting. Given the regulations around trading, I wasn't able to manage my own book of positions, but my team were receptive to my ideas when placing their positions. It was nice to have a bloomberg terminal too, which allowed me to really dive into the realities of the job. I was even given access to the in house trading system - which allowed me to contribute to desk with understanding what risk they had each morning.

My analytical and research skills have definitely improved when finding trade ideas. My communication skills have improved through a group presentation and client meeting I attended. I have also improved my capacity to use the bloomberg terminal after visiting their office/using it each day on the desk.

We had 3 main methods of support while on the internship. Firstly, HR were always ready to support with any issues/queries I had from an operational lens. Next, we had a line manager who was supportive at integrating me in with the other traders on the desk, and providing great career advice. Finally and of most benefit to me, has been my buddy who has upskilled my knowledge of FX immeasurably and been of great emotional support throughout.

Everyone is driven to achieve success. Everyone is very respectful and has great integrity. Above all, I would say the standout component of MUFG's culture was a willingness to support early career development.

It was a really great 10 weeks. I have learned more than I could have imagined, met great people in my cohort and wider global markets business and confirmed what job I want in the future.
