Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Learning to monitor and control complex processes that turn sewage into clean, safe water. This includes checking flows, sampling, analysing data, and adjusting treatment stages to keep everything running efficiently and within strict regulatory standards. No two days feel the same; one moment you might be in the control room reviewing system performance, the next you’re out on site inspecting assets or troubleshooting an issue.

The apprenticeship structure provides clear progression, combining qualifications with practical experience, so you can see your career building step by step. You gain not just technical skills, but also confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities that are valuable across the industry.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

After a month long induction including outward bound, you are in for a week each month during year 1. Then you are invited in for a day a month in the final years. Support is always there with on site learning daily.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Trainers and support staff are excellent. There is a skills coach and technical trainer, as well as support staff.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I learn the fundamentals in the classroom, then put them in to practice with my mentor and work colleagues on site.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes - although no teams there is a variety of networks to be involved in. Social and networking events happen frequently and the company is very transparent, holding annual conferences and many training opportunities.

An excellent, rewarding company to work for. High standard of training, the benefits and reward package including driving lessons and out of hours GP is amazing. And your wellbeing is really looked after as an apprentice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to United Utilities?
Research the company, think about the role you would like to do, not just the location. Progression is a real possibility.
