Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I work in the Special Services Division, a sub-division of Heavy civil Infrastructure. I can contribute to a variety of projects, developing skills in areas like advanced structural analysis, programming, asset management and technical report writing. My day-day basis can vary as I have been on many different projects for no longer than 6 weeks.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed a lot of software and excel skills. As well as report writing and learning how to communicate with emails and other administrative tasks. I have also learned how best to reference my calculations to standards, this will help a lot when I go back to university.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

A very comfortable atmosphere, SSD especially have a really nice vibe and I have got involved with many socials as well as playing football, badminton and going climbing with other MM employees.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have really enjoyed working for MM but the 4h total commute every day has been quite tiring. However it has definitely been worth it to experience everything I have done at the company and meeting some great people in the industry.

What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald

Give good specific examples of project work from university in your application but once it gets to the interview try to rely less on your academic achievements and focus more on how personable you can be and what kind of realistic aspirations you have for the future. Make sure to be real and not just follow a pre made script that others may also be following as you won't stand out!
