Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a Graduate Civil engineer in the nuclear sector, I am responsible designing steel, concrete and reinforced concrete sections (Beams, columns and slabs) by modelling and calculating the section size and loading to ensure a design is structurally sound, constructable and functional. In addition, reporting such as health and safety, sustainability, optioneering and sequencing is completed to support the structural design.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
For my university side, I completed a 5 year part time bachelors at a nearby university. I was released on day release working 4 days a week on project work, and had great support throughout. Learning this way allowed me to apply concepts and learning in real time and approach certain university modules with background knowledge and understanding, aiding the studies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learnt how to apply my knowledge and new concepts related to structural design and analysis, such as back to basics hand calculations, how to model and utilise the output and how to present and report my findings. In addition, I developed existing skills such as presenting and communications skills and personal skills such as time keeping.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The company and University were great. Through many mental struggles I received 2 rounds of free counselling through the work programme for myself, and 2 further rounds for my close family (Sister and mother) under the same scheme, which we have all greatly appreciated and helped greatly. In addition, all points of contact (HR, Line Manager, project contacts and peers) where very understanding and had no hesitation to listen, aid where possible and provided short term leave to address issues without problem.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
They always prioritised my studies over project work, allowing for extra study leave around coursework and exams, and offering courses and consultation throughout the process of my professional review progress.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
While the course was wide and covered lots of topics, The relevant modules to my work were in depth and gave me all the information to return to work and design. The wide range of modules also allowed me to move within sectors and focuses with a solid base knowledge across many areas.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
Many are lead by local ECP's for ECP's with funding from the company, in all areas (sports day, weekly sports, pay day drinks, winter/summer parties etc). I have not participated in many, but these are available.
