Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
I’m a Social Impact Co‑ordinator at Balfour Beatty Living Places, and day to day my role is about turning social value targets into real activity on our projects. On a typical day I might be sending emails and having Teams calls with project teams or colleges about T‑Level placements or work experience, planning or delivering school engagement sessions, or working with local charities to support community and volunteering activity. I regularly track evidence, update monthly social value reports, and write short case studies to show impact. I also support colleagues and subcontractors with ideas, guidance and practical ways they can get involved in delivering social value on site.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I really enjoy my programme. It aligns closely with my role and allows me to apply what I’m learning directly to my day‑to‑day work. I enjoy the variety, the practical focus, and the opportunity to develop skills that support real social impact, which keeps me motivated and engaged.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Yes, I’ve developed both new and existing skills. The programme has helped strengthen my communication, organisation and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly when working with project teams, education providers and community partners. I’ve also built confidence in planning activities, tracking impact and reporting outcomes, which I now use regularly in my day‑to‑day role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme is well organised and clearly structured, with defined modules, regular sessions and ongoing support. The structure makes it easy to plan learning alongside day‑to‑day work, while still allowing flexibility to apply learning directly in my role.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a strong level of support from my employer, including regular one‑to‑ones with my manager, access to learning and development opportunities, and flexibility to balance the programme alongside my day‑to‑day role. I’m encouraged to apply what I learn directly in my work and feel supported to ask questions and get guidance when needed

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider throughout my qualification. This includes regular check‑ins, clear guidance on requirements and deadlines, and access to support when needed. The support helps keep me on track and makes it easier to balance the qualification alongside my day‑to‑day role.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
My qualification supports me well in my role by reinforcing and building on the skills I use day to day. The learning links closely to my work in social impact, particularly around planning activity, engaging stakeholders, and evidencing outcomes. It helps me better understand best practice and gives me more confidence in how I approach and deliver my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved in extra‑curricular activities at work. This includes volunteering opportunities with local charities, attending sustainability and social impact forums, and taking part in wider networking events across the business.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I’d recommend Balfour Beatty from an early careers point of view because you’re given real responsibility and experience early on, not just watching from the sidelines. You get exposure to proper projects, support from people who want you to succeed, and opportunities to learn while you work. It’s a good place to build confidence, skills and a career, especially if you want to feel like your work has purpose and impact, not just a job title.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

Focus on showing a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in the role and the wider business. Balfour Beatty values enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement, so using real examples from education, work or volunteering can help demonstrate your potential, even if you’re at an early stage in your career.
